I am traveling out of town to visit relatives for the Holidays, and would like to take our good hosts two nice bottles of wine, I logged on the TSA.gov website and went to the Permitted and Prohibited Items (http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#10), and I guess I can not carry on board the bottles, and I really do not want to check them in, and have the baggage guys crush my bottles…what can I do, besides having them shipped to my destination by courier service?
On a funny note, they do allow you to carry on board, Gel Based sports supplements, but only 3 oz???I guess we should allow hijackers to have enough carbs to overtake the planes…
If you’re checking 2 suitcases, put one in each with plenty of clothes surrounding them as padding – I’d wager 9/10 times it’ll be fine. The one time would be when there’s NO bottles of wine in your suitcase when you arrive at your destination, thanks to a thirsty TSA agent. Even still, I wouldn’t flinch putting two in the same suitcase so long as they’re packed extremely well. We came back from a trip to Europe this past summer with 3 bottles in one small, rollerboard sized suitcase. Of course, they were carefully bagged separately in HUGE ziplock bags, and then wrapped in socks and pajamas. But they made it! Good luck!
I’ve put wine in my checked baggage on many occasions. I use bubble wrap then put the bottles in a shoe box and never have had any problems. The neoprene wine carriers by BUILT work nicely as well. I second putting a heft ziploc bag around the bottles, just in case.
I tried to check two bottles of wine on a flight from Tokyo to London and they made me remove them from my luggage and take it as carryon. They even provided a carrier to make it easier!
I am flying this weekend (domestic) and would like to take on a small guitar in a soft case to be stuck in the steward closet (or whatever it is called) … anyone try something like this recently?
