Performance Travel Trac vs. Kurt Kinetic Fluid Trainer

Does anyone know if there is any significant mechanical difference between Performance Bike’s Travel Trac Fluid Trainer vs. Kurt Kinetic’s Fluid Trainer?

At the Kurt Kinetic website they give a very nicely detailed working of the fluid trainer in that: “the roller, driven by your bikes tire, is connected to the impeller inside the sealed fluid chamber by a magnetic coupler. Twelve neodymium rare earth magnets, 6 per side, create a virtual drive shaft to spin the impeller inside the sealed fluid chamber. Although the drive shaft has two parts, the magnetic coupler links the two parts and it spins as a single unit.”

Performance Bike’s website does not go into any mechanical detail. Can one assume that the Performance Fluid Trainer also operates with fluid and magnets?

Much thanks,

Don’t know all the techy stuff and know nothing about the Kurt Kinetic, but I’ve had a Travel Trac for many years and have put a tons of hours on the damn thing. Pretty good piece of equipment for the price. I’d buy another if this old one ever breaks.

I’ve had a Kurt Kinetic for a few years, the model with the heavier flywheel. It’s pretty quite, stable and works fine. I find it hard to get excited about trainers/rollers (I’ve also got a set of Cyleops rolles).

I don’t know anything about ‘rare earth magnets’ or how they effect the operation of the trainer.

I got a Kurt last fall. It is my 5th trainer in my career of 20 yrs. It is by far the best trainer I have ever rode on.
