Doing my first IM this month. Does anyone know how to pee on the bike? I’ve tried to do it in training but I can’t bring myself to do it. Is it just a will thing? I’m a heavy sweater and need to hydrate a lot, so often over do it. Would be great to find a way to pee without stopping.
Unless you are gunning for a podium spot, why not just stop at a porta potty? They are set up every few miles on the course likely.
If you spray me in Mont Tremblant I will be very upset

I am not saying it’s right or wrong to pee on the bike, but in my (single) experience it’s worth 3 mins a pee.
That’s based on :
• No one at the porta loos.
• The loos being on a slow part of the course (blind right angle turn) where you are going pretty slow anyway.
When comparing bike computer (with auto stop below 0.5 mph) and Ironman’s clock there was a 3 min difference. I started and stopped my bike computer as close as poss to the mount and dismount lines.
I only peed once and took the opportunity to rearrange my nuts which was nice. If I was peeing 4 or 5 times and each one was going to cost three mins that would give me something to think about …

Wait for a slight downhill, stand on the pedals and pee. That’s it!
It’s tough to train yourself to undo what your parents once scolded you not to do. The method I used in training was to continue to hydrate after lunch during work but I didn’t allow myself to pee until I had started my bike workout when I got home.
By the time I changed into my bike kit I was doing the pee pee dance and nearly exploding before I could get my shoes and helmet on.
Good luck releiving yourself! ![]()

Peeing on the bike
Yeah, it’s how I clean my bike too! My neighbors think I’m weird though.

I think the answer to this is on the back of the flat Coke recipe.

This.
You can’t force it. Just stand and relax.
Now peeing while running, that is really zen.

Yep. Just lift up off the saddle a bit. It helps to have a slight downhill to keep momentum. The key is to relax and not force it. It’s such a freeing experience.
Doing it on the run is hilarious because you tend to splash around with every step. Suggest making sure nobody is around you because it becomes very obvious what is happening.
It’s worth quite a bit of time on the bike as you need to slow down from whatever speed you were holding approaching the stop. Coming to a stop, getting off the bike, hopefully there isn’t a line, get your clothing situated, 30 seconds or so to actually pee, fix clothing, then get out, get back on the bike, and up to speed. 2-3 minutes easily for a 30 second pee. Or you could just go while riding and lose maybe 10 seconds (because you stop pedaling for a moment to get the flow going)
Do it on a non-technical downhill and keep focused on riding, not peeing. I recommend having spare water on board to spray yourself down afterwords, makes the experience much better. You can also time it so you are doing it right before an aid station so you can spray down afterwords. Whatever you do, be tactful and make sure there is no one behind you please…
On a related note, has anyone ever gotten a penalty for peeing on the bike?
…Or has anyone ever been pee’d on??
Very very nearly. At a half iron about 6 weeks ago I was overtaking a lady who stood up and let it go. It took a short while to work out what was going on, it came out so quickly not only did it look like she’d poured a water bottle on herself, it also sounded like someone had thrown a bucket of water on the road. It was extraordinary. I didn’t really know what to do, or say, so just rode past and looked bewildered. If I’d been 10 seconds further back I’d have ridden through the tsunami she left in her wake.

So true. And yet every time I drink too much coffee I nearly poo myself on my morning run.
The only time I’ve ever peed on the bike was at IMLOU last year. I went by the porta potties and they had a pretty lengthy line each time, so it would have been easily 10 minutes. I made sure I had some water to splash on myself right after I peed. Ended up doing it 3 times. After you pee the first time, its pretty easy to do it a 2nd (and 3rd time).
I would just do like the world tour cyclist guys… whip it out and go. I’m not soiling myself… it’s not worth it.
I agree, just find a discreet place to pull off, get your business done, and get back on the gas!!!

have one leg straight, shift your hips on the saddle towards the straight leg, and make sure you lower your heel as much as you can. That way the pee runs down the correct leg and out the heel of the shoe and not soaking the whole shoe. .

I can’t make myself pee on training rides and I haven’t had to in HIMs, but in my one and only IM, I peed 4 times. The advice above is spot on - a slight down hill helps, slightly standing on your pedals and getting off the seat helps and waiting a bit helps. You do need to relax your body a bit (and why all 3 of the above things help).
It is the one thing about a race I couldn’t “practice” ahead of time, but don’t worry if you need to pee you will be able to.
