Peeing in the wetsuit and other Swimmming questions

  1. How many of you pee in your wetsuit on long open water swims

  2. Am I doing myself a disservice by drinking from a bottle of gatorade in between swim sets at the pool? In other words: I won’t have a gatorade bottle on the swim at an IM…will I be in trouble because I’m so used to sipping fuel in the middle of a workout?

  3. Does wearing two swim caps equate to a thermal swim cap?

  1. yes, I pee in the wetsuit. Best not to do it on the beach before you get in the water (witnessed on Saturday morning)
  2. drink if you need to during a workout. you will likely drink more before your ironman than you would before a workout. You should be fine in the IM.
  3. Don’t know.

No.

No.

and No.

  1. never did, but if I had no other choice, I probably would

  2. I never drink during workout except for the water I sometimes swallow

  3. I see no difference between wearing 1 or 2 bathing caps. After all, I am glad if I don’t have to wear one at all.

  1. raises his hand

  2. If you need to drink, drink. I wouldn’t sweat it for IM. You’re not going to be out there for that long (hopefully).

  3. Not sure, but I doubt it. Those things are pretty thin. Maybe if you stacked up like 10 of them on your head.

  1. Doesn’t need to be a long swim for me

  2. No, You will be tapered for an IM, not swimming intervals and well hydrated beforehand

  3. No, but it will keep you warmer, I’ve done it.

“Best not to do it on the beach before you get in the water (witnessed on Saturday morning)”

Best done on a boat launch so you get to see it run down hill through the fast swimmers lined up in front of you. Not that I have ever done that myself

Dave

two caps are warmer than one!

Does anyone use a thermal cap?

Seems like you wouldn’t get much use out of it…By June it would probably be stuffed in a drawer, no?

depends on the races…some are cooooold water.

doubling the caps makes it warmer, but not as warm as a polar cap.

and yes, i’ve peed in my suit. (and on my bike). tmi.

Let’s see: 10 minutes to race, strong need to use the facilities, line for port-a-potties that looks 15 minutes long, wading start. Pretty easy decision.

I honestly can’t recall a time when I didn’t pee in my wetsuit. Except when I tried it on at the store of course  Peeing in my wetsuit is part of my “warm-up”.

Now peeing while actually swimming, I find to be a challenge, can’t coordinate all the muscles.

2 caps definitely warmer than one or none as I found out yesterday. Don’t know about the neoprene caps.

I’ll add this:

Yes, I have a neoprene cap and even though I only used it twice last summer I was very glad to have it. Well worth the $ in my opinion to avoid one more thing to make me uncomfortable in a cold swim.

For in water starts, as we are all bobbing along waiting for the gun, I would imagine that more than 50% are peeing…

Most people cannot pee while actually swimming, unless you stop kicking completely

One thing about peeing the wetsuit out in here California. If you do it during or just before an ocean swim, there may be a white shark attractant quality associated with your urine. One hypothesis, with much scientific support, is that urine and fecal effluvia from seal haul-outs and the like is what helps the sharks find their prey.

Just a little factoid for y’all.

LIAR!

Question, do you pee’rs rinse off when you come out of the water or do spend the rest of the day covered in dried pee?

and the other 50% just finished peeing. Except for Ze Gopha, I guess.

Best thing about swimming is that you are working-out and bathing at the same time. No need to shower when you’re done

No, I always shower after an open water swim, especially ocean swim, can’t stand that salty feeling. But not usually after a pool swim, especially if it’s immediately before work or during lunch.

And of course, always rinse the wetsuit ASAP.
