planning on bring my tri bag as a carry-on tomorrow. renting a bike, so bringing pedals. anyone had a problem (or success) in bringing pedals (incl. SPD’s) in a carry-on? they don’t seem to have any dangerous possible use to them, but still concerned about the security person who’s never seen them before and defaults to “you can’t bring them on” then I’ll need to dump them in the garbage. Thanks.
I could see the security guy freaking out! But I’ve never tried it…
Test it out for us, bring about 3 dozen pairs of pedals and see if he thinks you are planning on building a Transformer! lol
GOod luck dude, I have no idea what they’ll do.
You should have no problem. I’ve carried all sorts of electronic junk through as carry on without a hint of a problem, fuel injection parts and all sorts of things. I had a friend who carried an aluminum tool on with a big lead acid gel cell, test boards, injectors, uncased radio parts and the TSA guys just ran it through x-ray without a comment.
My son did have a hassle getting his camera meter around x-ray at LAX (DTW didn’t mind). It’s an old school thing that apparently has a photocell that would be cooked by the radiation.
flew with a buddy once while carrying our pedals on board. I had my Time pedals (magnesium alloy with the sharp pointy edge) and my buddy had speedplays. Interestingly enough, I made it through but he got stopped. But all he had to do was explain that he was a biker and show how the shoes/pedals fit into each other and he was good to go.
I got my pedals through OK - however you cannot carry a pedal wrench in your carry on. As I was told by the security woman - and this is a direct quote - " I’m sorry sir, you have exceeded the 8 inch limit rule". I asked her to say that a bit louder. I was fortunate to have enough time to run back and put the wrench in my checked luggage.
I carry them on all the time. Only once did they even question them and when I explained what they were they were fine with that.
You should have no problems!
“I’m sorry sir, you have exceeded the 8 inch limit rule”
if I had a nickel for every time I heard that !!!

You’d be broke just like me?! ![]()
If your really lucky, they search you, search you good and deep. Dont fight it, people pay good money for this kind of treatment…
I carried look pedals thru security 3 times; twice they wanted to check the bag to see what it was, but I didn’t have any trouble taking them thru.

I’ve brought my pedals in my carry on twice with no problem. On our last flight, my wife had brought a gel candle through in her carry on and they were going to take it, along with my Chamois Butt’r that was in my carry on (that generated alot of laughs with the TSA!), but they offered us to option to put both items in one of our carry on bags and go back out of security and back to the counter to check that bag, which I did since we had plenty of time and there was no line at the United counter.
You may get pulled aside for an inspection. I had to open my bag after the X-ray machine, but the inspector let me through after looking in my bag and pulling out the pedals. You may want to have them on top of everything in the bag so they are easy to locate.
thanks, great advice. I’ll keep them in one of the 5 internal pouches that I can get to. and thanks to everyone else for the suggestions, and to jriosa for too-much-info re his personal situation.
No problem, I carry all my race gear and pedals (usually attached under my shoes) in my carry on and never had a problem.
