Pedal question

A lot of people were falling over at the Chgo Tri having trouble getting out of pedals at Chgo Tri. I was the opposite of having a problem getting out the pedals. My right foot slipped out 3x during the race, one time almost losing my manhood on the top tube, a la Lance when he was trying to catch up at the TDF after he crashed with Mayo after hooking onto the spectator’s bag.

I usually like a tight fit on the clips and actually usually takes me 2 tries to clip in and a good yank to get out, though I don’t get caught in it bc I know the angle to get it out on 1 try. Sunday, I had no trouble getting into the pedals at all and they slipped out quite easily. I realized afterward that the saturday tune-up must have adjusted the pedals. Is that odd, that a tune-up’er would adjust that, when they are almost always set to personal preference?

I have SPD’s, which came on the Bianchi, which I can use for spinning too. Previosuly, I had these things called bebops (see website) that I got at Mission Bay years ago in a bike, wetsuit, pedals package. These things were tight, with virtually no play, but I got used to them, and was able to clip in very quickly, maybe even faster than the SPD’s, but had to pigeon-toe maybe at a 45 degree angle between straight and left-right to get out. But I NEVER came out unintentionally and only fell over 2x (within the first week) then fine for maybe 3 years of use.

Question - do SPD’s always have a lot of play or can they get nice and tight? I am contemplating switching back to the old ones, probably except for winter if I am doing a lot of spinning.

THANKS.

Why did you switch in the first place? I’d much rather have tight pedals than loose ones…

Why did you switch in the first place?

just to try them out and see what I liked better. I am trying to get a feel for whether the SPD’s won’t give me as tight a fit, generally, or whether I just need to adjust them.

I used to have a pair of Ritchey’s on my road bike and a pair of SPD’s on my mountain bike. I seemed to always rip out of them. I haven’t tried any of the Shimano road pedals, so I don’t know if it is a problem there as well or anymore (someone else want to comment on them?).

All I know is ripping out of pedals is a bad accident waiting to happen! I’ve been using Speedplay and Time on my triathlon and mountain bike and haven’t had a problem since.

Did you ask the mechanic if he adjusted the tension on your pedal? It really seems odd they would touch that…it would be close to playing with someone’s seat!

haven’t asked yet. I thought it was weird too, but I have never had a problem slipping out before, and then for it to happen 3x on first ride post-tune was odd. wanted to know what I wanted to do before calling him, so if he offers to adjust the pedals back, I’ll just ask him to switch my cleats instead for N/C, if I go that route.

Side mount pedals???
