…is too much? Besides “personal preference”, how much do you need or do most ride tight with none? I use Look pedals and find my feet move a little too much but it does keep my knees from hurting.

I’ve turned my Looks down from 9 to 6 (although I could be wrong. It’s hard to read those numbers upside down). I don’t think I twist much while riding, but the angle needed to get out was a little too much. I though most knee pain was from incorrect cleat positioning, rather than from torsion during the pedal stroke.
The thing with float is that it’s ALL about personal preference. I’d hazard a guess that for the majority of people, 4-6 degrees (total) of self-centering float is pretty close to ideal. Some love having total free (unrestricted) float, whereas I like my feet locked down and run with no float whatesoever. I do have to be very careful when I set up my cleats, however.
The other bitch about float is that it’s usually quite expensive to experiment, as you require different pedals to see what the difference between “free” and “self centering” feels like. One advantage you have with your Looks is that you can play with the red & black cleats to switch between self-centering float and no float.
Ultimately however, it all boils down to what you find the most comfortable.
Like Khai said mostly personal preference.
I’m another person that doesn’t use any float. I use the black Look cleats with 0 dialed in on the pedal. I also spend a lot of time adjusting the cleats while riding on the trainer. Maybe an hour or so when they are new and then some fine adjustments later while on the road.
Some of my friends couldn’t ride without the float complaining about their knees or hips hurting. I have volunteered to help them with adjustments but they are allways to busy to fix their problem. Find what works for you I suppose.

Been cycling for 15 years, went to “NO float” about 4 months ago…love it!!
Thanks guys. I’m going to turn it down a bit at a time until it feels right and see what happens.
