Pedal and shoe in one?

I realized in the past 20 + years I have never walked in my bike shoes.

Haven’t taken my shoes off my pedal in at least 3 years and that was just to cut off the back strap shave off the heal and toe plastic which I guess is suppose to make them easier to pull on and walk in.

Any company ever make a shoe and pedal in one?

Not a cleat in a shoe but actual pedal and shoe in one

I have had the same pedals and shoes for at least 10 years so a shoe and pedal in one would seem good for me

There were some custom versions created for trackies back in the day IIRC, but nothing widely produced. I’m guessing there would be issues around very small market demand, as well as safety in the event of a crash.

It wouldn’t be too hard to modify most cleat/pedal systems to not disengage, but what would be the advantage?

You could always go “Little Indy 500”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX62dexpaZc&ab_channel=YomsemiteSam

Good point about being in a crash. Probably not a good idea after all

I just thought why pay for 2 things when maybe there was one. Also maybe save a couple hundred grams of pedaling weight and maybe be more aero

I altered my shoes years ago and dropped a chunk of weight. Thought maybe even more to strip off and get more aero

I tried the Giro empire SLX for the aero benefit as takes about by Thomas Gerlach in different sizes and inserts. they hurt my feet and just couldn’t get them to work for me

If you go with Speedplay and Rocket7 you have the lowest weight, and release if you need it, combo out there. With the Rocket7 solid carbon sole you also get the most efficient power transfer, and shoes that can be custom made using your orthotic mold. Durability is fantastic on both the pedals and shoes. Well worth the purchase price.

Hey Dave

Thank you for the information

I looked at the Rocket7 after reading one of your other posts about how much you like them

It is strange. I have been able to use speedplays on just about any shoe, even cheap ones and get years of use with no problem

That was until I tried the giro i mentioned above.

I then had a set of custom insoles made for me. They felt great in the shop but they were horrible when I actually road with them for more than 10 mins and a waste of almost $400

So with the Rocket 7 I could end up spending $2000 and end up with a shoe I couldn’t even use as I did with the custom insoles.

To start:

  • They are wear items. Few people would buy an integrated version.
  • There are multiple cleat styles and each with multiple float options. A shoe company would have to pick, reducing the number of possible customers even further.
  • Part of getting fit on a bike is adjusting cleat position. This wouldn’t work if it was built in.
  • Shimano cleat hardware weighs 34g. This would be your max weight saving for that cleat style, not hundreds of grams. The cleats themselves weigh just 37g, so even if the integrated version reduced total material, it wouldn’t be that much.

I can appreciate custom Rocket7’s are a significant investment. My ownership experience has been tremendous. My race shoes will last a lifetime at an average of 1000 km/year, and training shoes have to be replaced every 15 years, based on 10,000 km/year. In that you get a 170 gram shoe that has an integrated custom orthotic built in to the sole, so it is not added in after. They do it all the time and I am sure upon request, would be happy to provide you with a significant number of references. I play hockey 5 times/week for 5 months and coach during my off season from racing. I am on the ice 130 times/year and have custom skates. It is the same experience. The connection to the ice, control and stability are noticeably superior. It is the same with bike shoes. Custom maximizes what we want to accomplish, efficient power transfer with comfort.

So you’re going to trackstand at every single red light and never once going to need to put your foot down? Like ever?

I have not ridden on a street with traffic lights for at least 15 years maybe more like 20 years

When I have had to stop at a stop sign I just take my foot out of the shoe. Maybe 10 times in the past 20 years.

I guess you don’t have traffic lights or stop signs on your bike routes. Never stop to refill bottles? No mechanicals/flats in over 3 years? You lube your chain with bike shoes attached to the pedals? Wash your bike with shoes attached?

I am curious, how do you manage that? All indoor training?

Main bike route is 25 mile bike path one way no stop signs. I carry a camel back and a large water bottle. No need to stop to refill bottle

Can’t remember the last time I had a flat. But I change out tires every year so maybe that is why?

Have never had a mechanical on the road.

Yes I lube e the bike with shoes on the bike

I clean the bike with soft scrub and paper towel. Never used a hose on it no need to take the shoes off

Didn’t think it was so unheard of to leave rbe habits on

🤷‍♀️

Bike trail is 25 miles one direction

No stop signs

Graeme Obree famously glued and bolted his shoes to the pedals for his hour record. Partly to avoid it coming off, but also to get his foot closer to the pedal axle and get it more aero.

But that was for a very specific reason, and on the track, not for day to day use on public roads.

Taking your foot out of the shoe if you have to stop is literally double the effort of simply unclipping. Then you have to put your foot back in, re-tighten, etc. ??? How did that ever start as a natural behavior when needing to put your foot down?

Good for you that you’ve never had a mechanical. Mine are few and far between as well but I’ve had them. And I need to be able to get my foot out of the pedal fast to avoid face planting. You absolutely need the shoe and pedal to be separate entities for safety and just for wear in general.

Made logical sense to practice getting in and out of a shoe while it’s on the bike. Started sprint tris 40 years ago. It became second nature. Often having one of the fastest transitions in a race

Forget the 35g saving from shoes if you’re carrying a camel back on a road/tt bike… You’ve got more weight there. Especially if you’re only riding 50miles at a time.

And learn how to unclip. Explore a new route. Go wild, try a route with a give way sign

I was doing a google search and this thread came up 3 years later lol

Still don’t take the shoes off the pedals except when I changed to wahoo duel sided pedals and put the new cleats on the shoes

So no not a troll.
