These are the the '05 model, the blue/gray version. Got 'em on closeout at the PI factory store for $100. Sort of an impulse buy…planning on using them for races only, I like my Shimano road shoes alot, but wanted a single strap shoe for races.
I don’t have them but from what i remember the strap opens on the wrong side for tri-specific shoes (forcing you to expose your hands to the chain ring when doing them up on the go). I was going to get those ones but went for the tri-fly model instead. No big deal as i found both models to be really comfortable.
I have had these for several years. They are extremely comfortable and transfer power well. The strap could be considered to be in the wrong directions, but if you pull it out as far a the catch-tab you can attach them to your pedals in transition and get your feet in them once underway. They have worked very well for me. They breathe well and I have not had any hot spots even in an IM.
I have those shoes and have loved them. The strap goes to the outside; not inside. The new ones go to the inside though. They have been very bomb proof and I live on a gravel road and have walked down it in them…unfortunately. I thought about getting the new model, but I saw no reason. I still love these. They clean up pretty easily too.
Need to resurrect this post for a follow-up… I also purchased a pair of these shoes since price was too good to pass up ($90). I like to have the shoes on the bike when I start, and leave them on as I dismount; and that darn strap is really getting in the way. I do like the shoes a lot other than that, but I’m somewhat OCD and it’s making me a little crazy.
Tim - you mention pulling the strap all the way to the tab stops, but that doesn’t quite work for me. There are two sets of tabs stops, and the first set leaves a couple inches of the strap still hanging out there and slapping against the crank/pedals. My first thought is to cut down the first tab stops so the strap will pull all the way out to the end tab stops. Any thoughts or other ideas before I start hacking?
PS: To the Pearl Izumi folks… sometimes, everybody does it the same way for a reason! : )
I have some feedback as well, now that I’ve ridden in these shoes a few times.
A) they are very comfortable, and feel quite stable. They have a narrower arch then my Shimano R151’s, which gives them a snugger fit. My longest ride thus far is 2.5 hours on them, but so far so good. Not hot spots or pressure points.
B) I have to agree with you on the strap. I wish I had realized it was the wrong direction before buying them…it really does get in the way on the drive train side.
