Peanut Butter-Organic?

Just wondering what the opinion is on organic or just natural peanut butter? What do most of you eat? Is it really worth the extra cost?

I go with better taste and low sugar over high protein. maranatha natural organic fits the bill.

Smuckers Natural for me
.

It is worth the cost - No Partial Hydro Oil… Smucker’s Organic

I buy the Smucker’s Natural. It is just peanuts and salt. You can get all natural without going to organic. IMO, organic isn’t worth the price. In fact, there are actually downsides to organic vs. conventional growing.

Regular peanut butter, at least all the brands I’ve seen, doesn’t have partially hydrogenated oils (trans fats). It does have added vegetable oils, along with sugar.
I don’t get natural stuff because I don’t think it tastes any better. I remember I also lined up the nutrition facts and saw a negligible difference between all the ingredients except sodium and sugar - natural had more sodium, regular had more sugar.

quick question: i read over your link, but i didn’t see the “downsides” of organic. can you enlighten me?

Sure. My takeaway from that article is that organically grown foods are more expensive, may not appear as nice looking (appetizing), and could spoil faster.

Not that there aren’t upsides. But, I don’t think they are worth it. That’s just me.

In a class I had last year (current issues of food science), we had to do a lot of reading and debating about organic foods and whether they were “worth it”. Seemed like the only advantage to organic foods was the reduced pesticides, particularly with produce… may be true for peanut butter too, I guess. Organic foods are way too expensive for me, so I just make sure to thoroughly wash produce before I eat it.

Get fresh made from whole foods market.

JIF - I know, blasphemy.

I shop at Aldi, a discount grocery store. They carry many of their own generic brands. I use Peanut Delight natural peanut butter, just peanuts and salt. Plus I love the generic names their food has. I believe I pay something like $1.89 for an 18oz jar.

Costco Organic. It’s pretty good, even though it is creamy. Priced about the same as Smucker’s natural.

This is hands down the best tasting PB I’ve had.
I did pick up a large jar of MaraNatha Almond Butter at CostCo last weekend for $6.50…a normal jar is usually $8 at the grocer.

Maranatha is what I use as well. Best out there IMO.

I’ve been getting smuckers natural, but the problem I have is that it dries out. I keep it in the fridge as the label says, hoping that works. It is also hard to spread.

It isn’t a huge deal when I put it in oatmeal b/c it melts, but it is a pain to try to smear on a bagel, waffle or toast.

I’ll use it for oatmeal, but I will not for a spread.

I like the ground up peanuts - at Shaw’s or Whole Foods - failing that Trader Joe’s without anything added
.

Santa Cruz organic all the way from Whole Foods. If you are going to eat peanut butter, might as well eat the real thing without added high fructose corn syrup and hydroginated oils. Peanut butter is healthy food by itself and does not need any added junk. Organic or all natural versions are good. Stay away from that Jiff’s junk.
High Fructose Corn Syrup has been covered in the latest Triathlete. It is banned in Europe and Canada as well some Asian countries.

I eat Crazy Richard’s 100% natural peatnut butter. The only ingredient is peanuts. No sodium, sugar or hydrogenated oils. I buy it at the local supermarket. Tastes good.

I grind my own at the local Safeway using plain organic peanuts, no salt. Can’t get more natural than that!
