Peach Classic Triathlon, Penticton

After my bitching about people not supporting the smaller events in Penticton I’d like to give a shout out to everyone about the new and improved Peach Classic Triathlon in Penticton on July 18.The Peach Classic is the oldest triathlon in BC and used to be a really popular event. Some say the drop in poularity is because the bike and run course were so hard and with that in mind the organisers have changed the run course to a flat two-loop affair down Lakeshore and around the two blocks behind it.The bike is still the same tough course,as it should be considering the race is the BC provincial champs for 2010.

For those not wanting to do an Olympic distance race they have added a sprint tri to be held the same day.

As of today there are only 127 entrants in total signed up for the two events(how sad is that).Hopefully there will be a rush of entries in the next month.

For people with kids the Boston Pizza Junior Tri will be held as usual the day before the Peach Classic so you can bring your kids to Penticton and have a great family tri-geek weekend.Info for the kids race can be found at the Penticton Tri Club site below.

That’s too bad, the run was one of the big reasons for me to go back - I’ve done the race twice and still have something to prove on that run course.

To add to your kudos

  • the swim is from the Ironman start at the Peach, good chance for those doing IMC to practice racing in Okanagan Lake.
  • the bike course is GORGEOUS. You ride along the Naramata Bench past some of the best wineries in the Okanagan. In fact a wine-tasting excursion the day before is a perfect to check out the course. I don’t think the course is that hard - it’s hilly but kind of like a roller coaster.
The last year I did the race I saw a deer, a coyote and a bald eagle - which was pretty cool. Also somewhat exciting as the deer jumped across the road, perfectly judging the gap between cyclists going in each direction.
  • I liked the old run. It was seriously challenging, it’s shocking how hard it is to run 1km on the flat after running 3km downhill. However the flat run course should make for a seriously fast race, similar to the Apple.
  • Great schwag - in stead of a t-shirt one year I got a towel and one year a small, soft sided-cooler (the size that could fit a six pack). I use both all the time, while many of my race shirts are bike rags.
  • Overall Penticton is a great place to take your friends and family. Lots for the kids to do, there’s even a water park on the race route, wineries to keep the adults happy, sunshine, beaches, the list goes on …

Bump…

Last bump from me for this great race.

Only 167 people signed up in total for both races and only 16 Pentictonites supporting the race so far.

WTF!!!
