Yes, tell little Sergio to rest! It is important for the body and the brain. The fatigue usually takes time to set in. He’ll be feeling it… Tell him to have fun. Relax. BE A KID!
You don’t have to ride your bicycle at all, you know. And 3 times per week is not okay if it is 5 hours each time! It is most important to relax. Riding the bike can be relaxing. Ride with your dad. Ride with friends. Don’t ride. If it were me, I’d leave the bike at home, though. It will be good to not have it there to think about.

Don’t worry Jordan, I am the boss of him He will not ride the bike for two weeks. He is already on his 5th day of bike abstinence and in a few hours he will leave town to spend a few days watching his cycling team mate (three years older than him) race at the UCI Junior Track World Championships. That will keep him off the bike for the weekend. On Monday he will fly to Phoenix where he will spend about 10 days. He will take his bike, but he will not ride until the 12th (two weeks after his last race).
Jordan and Paulo… I want Sergio to be tested at Phoenix. I have some questions about this. I will appreciate if you check your PMs in a couple of hours.
Except that Sergio Sr. has to work to keep his son from overdoing it, not vice versa. If you’ve followed his threads, Sergio Sr. just tries to provide the most for his son, but I certainly don’t ever sense that he is driving him. Usually, as is evidenced by this thread, he is trying to keep him from training himself into the ground. The kid is a competitor. His dad just wants to make sure that he can be the best he can. if I sensed otherwise, I certainly would not contribute…
sorry, but this whole situation sounds like a recipe for disaster. ever hear of todd marinovich?
I just read the biography. Pretty sad but not related. I do understand your comment when reading some posts like these out of context. He is the one that sets the goals. One of my main duties is to keep him from training too much and the tests that I want to discuss with Jordan are primarily to keep him in good health.
Sergio did a great race at the Nationals but it was not his race, nor his year. He was by far the most combative rider. He tried to break away many times but it was mission impossible in such a track and under very windy conditions. I could see him trying to organize a break away talking to the other kids trying to convince them to dare and keep the break away but as soon as it was the other kid’s turn to pull against the wind things just slowed down. They just did not want to cooperate and maybe felt as if it was a suicide mission. I do not blame these kids, maybe it really was a suicide mission
He loves road racing but he is not ready for bunch sprints (he says that he never will ), but this was a race that we all knew was going to end in a bunch sprint. In the last lap the pedal of one of the kids kit the ground and at least 8 kids (and maybe up to 10) in front of Sergio went down in a very scary way. I was at the other end of the track, 250 m away, but a friend of mine was right in front of him and he says that Sergio missed a body at full speed by a few inches. The State Governor of Chihuahua is a cyclist and they had an army of paramedics at the event. I take my hat off to the organizers of the event, such great organization is not the norm in Mexico.
I am glad he was not one of those kids that went airborne during the bunch sprint. For a few seconds it felt as if my heart stopped and then began to beat again when I saw him pedaling towards the finish line. I am happy. He has a big engine but road racing is very different to racing triathlons. You need a lot of experience to win in such a race. I am glad that he is riding his bike having fun, training with his cycling mates in his spare time and not bored, playing video games or kicking empty cans around the neighborhood like his old friends.
Dave, Did you came to MZT while we were in the USA and Chihuahua?
