Paula Findlay 2X Canadian Road Time Trial Champion

Not really, I’m just tired of sad little shits who can only get it up by denigrating others.

Ok, then, good thing I didn’t denigrate anyone, so you can move on.

I looked up the Canadian Qualifying standards and did not find that stipulation.

Not to derail thread too much, but then lionel has a chance for the olympic spot too. Regardless, +1 vote for Puala to go for the olympics!

If “fitness influencer” Lionel was interested, he would have shown up at Nationals.

As a fitness influencer you need to be taking the opportunities where you will get the most views, and this is usually done with new content over repetition

LOL. Most influencer content is repetitive with costume changes.

Do the TT riders have to be part of the road team?

It’s complicated.

If we are are talking the Olympic Games - it’s a bit of a numbers game, regarding entries for a particular Sport Discipline as a whole ie Road Cycling, that the IOC puts on that Discipline. So NSO’s tend to choose, via whatever process they use, riders who will be able to do BOTH the ITT and the Road Race - to send a rider who would JUST do the ITT, for countries using the full compliment of the riders that they are sending, who would just do the ITT, would be rare!

The UCI World Championships are a different beast - and there may be a bit more latitude there. But NSO’s are still looking for and giving perhaps more consideration to riders who can perform multiple tasks - particularly this years’ Super UCI World Championships in Scotland. Take a Derek Gee as an example - he might be the extreme opposite of a Paula Findlay - even though they are BOTH Canadian ITT Champions. Gee - could race the ITT, the Road Race, AND has extensive experience on the Track, being part of Canada’s Team Pursuit Team internationally (Bronze Medal at in the Team Pursuit at the 2019 World Championships), and the Endurance Races on the Track (Points Race etc . . . - he’s a past Canadian Champion in that). That Gee is a lock for a spot going to Glasgow is 100% a certainty. Paula Findlay if she wanted to go??

I know the Cycling Canada selection Committee is virtually meeting over the next week to finalize the Team for Glasgow!

Honestly, I am surprised that Lionel has not taken on this challenge. It’s clear from his ride One Hour Canadian Record ride a few years ago, that from a pure fitness and power perspective he has, the engine and the capabilities to compete with the best Canadian Road cyclists in an ITT.

He does not have the power to beat the top Canadian guys
He does not have the cda either
Top 5, maybe.

**A few problems: this is obviously in Team Canada’s interest, but not really in a pro team’s interest. **

It’s actually in no one’s interest! Pro Road teams would be VERY unlikely to take on a rider who will ONLY do TT’s. And as I mentioned elsewhere, due to number restrictions from IOC/UCI, by taking a rider who ONLY will do the TT, a National Team/NSO will then “lose” having a rider being in the road race - and remember cycling at this level is a team sport and those other riders, outside of the designated favorite can be VERY helpful - particularly someone with some TT Big Engine fitness who can actually be quite helpful at certain times in a Road Race.

Cda and handling maybe not. But I wouldn’t count him out on power and endurance.

Haha good one

Lionel still has the canadian hour record almost 3 years later, despite the cyclist on the commentary that day saying that cyclists couldnt believe a triathlete holds the record and that it wouldnt stand long

He’s not out-powering and out-enduring any male WT cyclist from 68kg and up who has the slightest interest in TT’ing. The course in Glasgow is 47.8km with 352m of climbing, less climbing than the course was during the Yorkshire WC TT but if the course is similar, he doesn’t stand a chance.

Just to bring Paula back in the discussion and not turn it 100% into a Lionel thread, maybe, just maybe, if they focused on TT and not dilute 20-30 hours a week across 3 sports, they could get their power numbers up to World Tour levels.

I don’t know about Paula because I don’t have a clue what the women are producing.

But for the men, try taking a peek int Derek Gee’s results. He had a very ordinary TT. His power numbers are humungous.
I have no insight to the guy from Ineos, but I suspect he is strong
There was a guy from our local team who did top 5. I have seen his numbers, HUGE.
There is a guy not there due to Tour de France duty. Big numbers. And talk about endurance.

Like I said, with work, and a focus on cycling, on a good day, maybe. But it’s a stretch.

Gee did 406W for 44 minutes. I don’t know what sort of power Lionel can put out for a duration like that, but, for context, this is Gee during his ride - you’d know better than I do, Marc, but I’d think the CdA differential would mean Lionel would have to be putting out wayyyyyy more watts than 400 to be even in the same ballpark as Gee speedwise.

Did he publish his data?
Did he provide any info on it ? To my understanding it was suboptimal.
He can do better than that without a Giro in the legs

It’s on strava. Teo’s is too (410W to finish 3rd, 51s behind Gee). Yes from what I gather he was not firing on all cylinders.

It would be NEW. Anyways Paula should go for it, as she has former ITU experience she can fit well on the team all around

I love watching Findlay succeed. I feel like triathlon Canada really hung her out to dry when she completed at the Olympics. I’d love to see her come full circle, years later, and have a good showing in another sport. I would imagine, for her, that would be an incredibly redeeming moment, and she has certainly been putting in the work to deserve it.

I don’t know specific cda numbers, but Derek’s position in that picture LOOKS really good - and keep in mind that’s with UCI regs for the bike set-up! I know that the Canadian Men’s Team Pursuit Team, of which Derek has been part of (Winning a Bronze Medal at the World Championships in 2019 - and 5th at the Olympic Games in Tokyo) has spent considerable time refining bike position to optimize aerodynamics for both the individual riders but also when they are riding as a quartet on the track! It’s a HUGE part of Team Pursuit success!

I know that Lionel has spent a great deal of time and effort as well trying to refine position - but he does not look like Derek on the bike!

more on how she was hung to dry?
