If one has this injury / irritation, is it a constant pain or only when training?
Just curious cause I feel a slight twinge/tickle in my left knee (feels like under upper right side of knee cap). I don’t have any pain in stairs and there is no real pain when running or biking.
Patellar tendonitis would hurt you most when your knee was not warmed up, not when you’re exercising. I’ve had it in the past when i was doing lots of jump training (plyometrics) for volleyball - hence the nickname for the injury - "jumper’s knee.) Long car rides and plane rides would absolutely KILL me. I couldnt enjoy the movie theater because it hurt so bad. But once I was warmed up i could jump 38 inches with no twinge of pain.
But technically, patellar tendonitis would hurt in the space directly below your kneecap, where the doctor whaps you with his little rubber hammer. It connects your kneecap to your shin. If it’s above your knee, your talking about the quadriceps tendon. never heard of quadriceps tendonitis…
If the pain feels like it is under the knee cap, and not in the tendon below the knee, then I would suggest you are describing patellar femoral syndrome, or “runners knee”. This is different from jumpers knee as described by the poster above.
Runners knee will generally hurt all the time, but more with exercise and in particular exercise where the knee is highly bent and/or taking high load (i.e. squats).
Quadriceps tendinitis is common in people involved in activities that include a lot of running, jumping, stopping and starting. Pain from quadriceps tendinitis is felt in the area just above the patella. There may be swelling in and around the quadriceps tendon and it may be sensitive to touch. The pain can be mild or in some cases the pain can be so bad that it prevents athletes from playing their sport.

I have something very similar so I am interested as well.
I’m heading off to the physio to get a professional opinion, but he isn’t specialized in sports related injuries so uncertain what the verdict will be.
Another symptom, if I tap the upper right part of the knee cap I feel a slight pain “underneath” the knee cap. I will read up regarding the quad tendinitis.
I can’t say that I have any serious pain, just came back from a swim workout. Yesterday I did a fitness test, 3k hard. First time I noticed it was when I had moved my seat forward on my bike, I’ve read that this can cause some irritation in the knee. The seat has been moved back since then.
