Passing out?

I know low blood pressure sometimes causes people to pass out - especially when standing up suddenly… what else would cause this?

Jeeez-heat stroke, dehydration, hit to the head, brain damage, ect…what kind of question is this?

Passing out is not common and should have a reason that need to be identified.

Since beginning of this year I’m suffering of some kind of heart disease that was not identified yet ( My doctor allowed me to return of training ). But if I passed out it would bug me and I would stop training at all. I know that arrythmia could cause “passing out” situations.

that happens to me if my blood sugar gets too low. you OK?

I think this is best answered by a visit to your doctor.

Lets see, I’ve passed out from concussions, low blood sugar. heat stroke, and my favorite a pulmonary embolism last year.

I feel fine now… had a nice run this morning and everything.

Not sure what the deal was. I got up to get the phone and found myself on the floor a bit later. I know there was some abnormal stuff with my insulin recently…

Geez! No wonder your username is couchweight!

Off the coumadin yet?

Ha, I figured you of all people would catch that one. Actually, embolism was last year. I’ve been through plenty of injuries. Had an sci that left me in a chair for a while. So, lots of fun things came along with that. I actually have a green field filter next to my heart. So the embolism wasn’t as bad as it could of been. Still kicked my ass for about 3 months though.

Wow - well if you have a Greenfield “birdcage”, you have obviously had more than 1 DVT/PE! Lucky you … protein C and/or S or other lucky genetic clotting issues?

I’ve been suffering from this for about 5 months now. Stand up, fall down. If I make it past the first step or two, everrything is ok. Been to my Dr. She sent me to an ENT who said inner ear stuff is fine. Blood pressure is normal, heat, cold doesn’t seem to matter and doesn’t seem to affect training but very frustrating and kind of embarrasing at work. If we have a common factor, it may be insulin as diabetes runs heavy in my family. Grandfather, father, his sister, my nephew is on a pump.
If you find something that works, let me know.

Actually, I’ve only had 1 DVT. I had a bruise on my spinal cord at T4 and C4 that left me ASIA A elav from T4 down. i was supposed to be in a wheel chair for the rest of my life. Seems they put those filters in anyone that is expected to be in a chair for good. Funny thing though. I got the clot about 3 years after I was out of the chair. Doctor actually thinks it was a piece of debry from a valve on heart? I think thats what they said. Long story on that one…

I forgot one other reason to pass out. Blood loss. Did that one too. Tore an artery in half. Good thing I was in the ER when it ripped apart.

I have done this a couple times right after swimming…swimming maybe 2 miles in a lake and then get out on the beach and go to take my wetsuit off and find myself feeling a little funny…then slowly everything shuts down and i pass out…i feel great swimming but something in those two times caused me to just pass out…

went to the doctor…heart scans…but all was negative…its very weird…

Been there; done that. Except I was at work and took out a water cooler on my way down

What was the verdict on your Arenal issues. Orthostatic hypotension is a common symptom of Adrenal fatigue. The Adrenals produce Aldosterone, which a hormone that regulates Sodium and Potassium balance in the blood. If your Sodium levels fall off, your BP will drop.

Try taking more salt throughout the day to see if that helps.

I passed out going number one… vaso vagel? I know I spelled that wrong.

EEK! Dr. visit! Don’t make me sic Egli on you…

Egli sic-ed himself on me for 7 miles this morning, and I think he’s coming back for more. We’re going over to watch the Flugtag thing in a bit…

I already have a follow-up visit with my endocrinologist in 3-4 weeks, so I will check in then (he schedules for 6+ weeks out).

Same thing happened to me earlier this year. Got up to go to the restroom in the middle of the night. Woke up on the floor five feet away with my girlfriend over me screaming my name. Unfortunately, I got a concussion on the way down when I slammed my head on the edge of the desk too.

Doctor wasn’t entirely sure what was wrong, but an MRI w/ contrast (they inject radioactive dye) did find that I have a “venal thrombus” in the back left side of my head. Basically a small blood clot in a vein outside of my skull. The doctor isn’t sure if that’s what caused the passing out. So it might be worth getting an MRI of your head too if you haven’t already.

This happens to me every now and again, and has since I was 16 years old. As I have gotten older, I have learned that I need to be careful when I stand up. I have to make sure that I am not holding my breath, or bearing down when standing. It sounds weird but I think that I actually vagal myself out sometimes. I have also learned to sense when it is happening and I will put my hands against a wall or something for support and change my breathing patterns until it passes, usually about 5 seconds. When it happens I get dizzy and my eyes get colors in front of them.

A couple of times I have been in front of a mirror and have been able to watch it happen. My impression is that nobody would even know that it was going on.

I have mentioned it to my doctor and he doesn’t seem too concerned about it. My physicals all have been fine, and aside from my weird cholesterol issues, my lab values are perfect.

To answer your question though, there are dozens of things that could be going on that could cause you to pass out. Some are serious and some aren’t. Sometimes, the most dangerous thing about passing out is the fall.

Peresonally, if it were happening more than once every few days I might worry about it a bit more. Definitely mention it at your next Dr.'s appointment.

Good luck,
Bernie
