Passing of a hero

Ronald Reagan - Age 93, Eternal Optimist, Ideal American, Great President, Immortal Man
.

Slowtwitch Challenge of the Week:

Can we make it to Friday w/o an argument concerning whether or not Reagan was a great Prez?

My guess is no.

let me see, right wing prez, and the opening line is “Ideal american”, im gonna agree with you and say, no, there will be an arguement
.

I can only hope to be as good an actor…

Regardless, he was a great man and a great American.

There should be no argument IMO. History has proven his policies, actions, and demeanor were all successful. Even many of his political opponents have nothing but the utmost respect for him as a president and man. It will be tough to find many to argue against him as an ideal american. He and FDR are the two greatest president of the 20th century.

But on here someone will hate him for being a republican (and no other reason) and the arguments will begin.

he was great as “The Gipper”
.

“regardless”? what is that in reference too? I made no statement about him, except that he was a republican, and then your post makes no sense. heres what im gonna do, im gonna post a few things, not make any comments about them, and never check this post again, so fyi, i wont respond to anyones responses:

trinkle down economics

“just say no” anti-drug campaign

star wars’ price tag

<<Ronald Reagan - Age 93, Eternal Optimist, Ideal American, Great President, Immortal Man >>

Let us not forget that he brought down the Soviet Empire and in the process, darn near eliminated the threat of global nuclear war/destruction.

Are you not the guy who said he was not going to check this thread again?

Oh man, let me catch my breath…

And you complain about your e-mail being clogged with crap?

Just a minute…

So you post on a political thread, on a forum famous for off-topic political flame wars?

Hold on, please, I can’t stop chuckling…

And then stoop to my level and hurl insults back?

Dude, or whatever, take the high road and ignore me!

Regan was responsible for disarming hundreds (In both US and Russia) of nuclear wepons, that alone qualifies for greatness!

“Regan was responsible for disarming hundreds (In both US and Russia) of nuclear wepons, that alone qualifies for greatness!”

as far as i know, the only other person in history to be such a successful disarmer of nukes was superman, who threw all of the world’s nukes at the sun in “Superman IV”. now there’s a real hero.

Statement from Senator John Kerry on the Death of Ronald Reagan

Boston, MA - Senator John Kerry released the following statement today:

"Ronald Reagan’s love of country was infectious. Even when he was breaking Democrats hearts, he did so with a smile and in the spirit of honest and open debate. Despite the disagreements, he lived by that noble ideal that at 5pm we weren’t Democrats or Republicans, we were Americans and friends. President Reagan and Tip O’Neill fought hard and honorably on many issues, and sat down together to happily swap jokes and the stories of their lives. The differences were real, but because of the way President Reagan led, he taught us that there is a big difference between strong beliefs and bitter partisanship.

"He was the voice of America in good times and in grief. When we lost the brave astronauts in the Challenger tragedy, he reminded us that, ‘Nothing ends here; our hopes and our journeys continue.’

"Now, his own journey has ended-a long and storied trip that spanned most of the American century-and shaped one of the greatest victories of freedom. Today in the face of new challenges, his example reminds us that we must move forward with optimism and resolve. He was our oldest president, but he made America young again.

"Our prayers are with his family, and the wife he loved in a way all the world could see. And to the end, she loved him with courage and complete devotion. She helped all of us better understand the cruel disease that took him away before it took his life, and what we must do to prevent and cure it.

“Teresa and I and our family extend our deepest sympathies to Nancy Reagan and the Reagan family. Today, from California to Maine - ‘from sea to shining sea’ - Americans will bow their heads in prayer and gratitude that President Reagan left such an indelible stamp on the nation he loved.”

Thank you for posting that, CTL.

I hope he is resting peacefully. IMO the US hasn’t had a decent President since he left office.

What I find interesting about the claim that he brought down the Soviet Empire is that the regime didn’t collapse under his watch, but under Bush the first.

Also, it seems pretty implausible to say that the Soviets fell because Reagan had a conscious strategy of spending the Soviets into oblivion. I doubt that that was the stated strategy, although it may have been the unintended effect. The Soviets were going to collapse one way or another, and the arms race, which was really strategically about building US power, expedited it a little bit.

Reagan ultimately had as much to do with the Soviets’ collapse as Clinton did with the roaring economy of the 1990s. He had something to do with it. But he was also in the right place at the right time.

Does that make him a bad president, no. Just trying to point out how we love to simplify history and give all the credit to one great man.

“Reagan ultimately had as much to do with the Soviets’ collapse as Clinton did with the roaring economy of the 1990s. He had something to do with it. But he was also in the right place at the right time”

Roaring economy of the 90-'s??? All that dot com BS. All those companies whose stocks were overvalued when they weren’t showing a profit or even selling a product??
We are a bit closer to reality now.
