Partially hydrogenated oils

I’ve been trying to eliminate these from my diet over the last little while and in light of a few recent posts have a few questions. What should I be looking for and avoiding on ingredient lists on the side of food packets? Are there any products in that are surprisingly high in them? Any other tips on what to avoid and substitute with?

Cheers for any tips.

It will say “partially hydrogenated” on the package. Most packaged foods will have it, even crackers and other foods like that.

There’s no other ways in which it could be labelled? Looked at a few tubs of peanut butter, which I’m sure has PH oils in it, and there was no mention?

“Natural” peanut butter is what you want. If it is separated with a layer of oil on top when you buy it, it probably has little or no hydrogenization. Just stir it up and keep it in the fridge–that will keep it from separating. Any PB that doesn’t separate at room temp has hydrogenated oil.

Helpful link, thanks. Although, it is produced by the Peanut Advisory Board.

Any other popular foods that may have PH Oils not listed in the packaging?

Watch out for lots of the so called “energy bars”. They are filled with partially hydrogenated oils and sat fats. Most are a heart attack in a package. Stay away from most of them and read the labels carefully. Typically the better they taste, the worse they are for you health. Bars that taste like crap are typically good for your arteries. Most versions of the original powerbar are great. Very low on all the bad stuff.

Palm kernel oil is one of the oils you want to stay away from. I think coconut oil is another bad one. When you cook, cook with peanut or olive oil.

The “tropical” oils get a bad rap. There’s no such thing as a bad natural food - including coconut oil.

Non-processed palm oil (from the fruit) is healthy. Palm Kernel oil (from the kernel) is extracted using a solvent - not good.

My dad was/is a huge partially hydrogenated oils (PHO’s) = very unhealthy for the past 20+ years person. I think most labels say the words “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil” or other PH-oil. Margarine usually is PHO’s. Vegetable shortening also PHO’s. Look for labels where you can tell what they use - so you should see canola oil, butter, other oils without the PH in front…
