Paris-Roubaix (1)

Tom Boonen (24 years) wins “the double” : Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix in one week.

What’s next ? Green jersey in tour de France ??

Freak.

Boonen, not you

What’s next ?

Amstel Gold.

Boonen is not starting saturday. After wednesday (Scheldeprijs) he is taking vacation for 3 weeks. Well deserved, I guess.

Eurosport coverage was crap eh…can’t beleive how bad it was…on Spanish TV they had similarly crap coverage - must have hed something to do with the TV rights? - anyway, but on Spanish TV they show’d the decisive moments of the race when Flecha, Boonen and Hincapie broke off from the other two in the 5 man lead pack…all of a sudden they’re together then Eurosport shows the three men getting into the velodrome…

The OLN coverage, although tape-delayed, was not too bad. They focused their 2 hours on the big break and then the three-up finish.

The fact that I was traveling helped me stay away from results on the web so I could watch the coverage with total surprise.

Good for Boonen.

Good for George

Good for Flecha

I wanted George to win. But I also knew that when Boonen made the three-up break that the result was foregone conclusion. Only a freak mechanical would have made things different. Boonen is a freak of nature able to ride these super-hard races like he does AND sprint with the best of sprinters in the business. No way the other two were going to handle that…oh and the fact that the race ends on a track and Boonen is Belgian…hard to overcome that combination…unless you’re also Belgian.

Unforgiveable for Eurosport to miss the break and not even reply it later at the appropriate time in the broadcast. It was bad enough that they only allowed 45 minutes for the race but that took the biscuit.

…as I said, I had Spanish TV to watch that in at least so…if not I would not even know about it…when’s the next one to watch then?

Agree. OLN coverage was excellent. The commentary by Paul and Phil (I think that’s their names) was also excellent. Phil knew Hincappie was not in position for the finish sprint as they came around the back stretch. He also described riding on the cobbles so well, you could really imagine how difficult it must of been.

I wanted George to win but I don’t know why Flecha waited for thesprint. he traditionallg goes it alone form a long way out. I don’t know why they thought they could beat Boonen with a sprint. Tom definetly looked the freshest of the 3 as well.
