Sunday (March 8th) at 9:30am we will meet at the bottom of Palomar at the general store/taco shop at 9:30am. The store is located on Hwy. 76 just east of Valley Center Road.
We will ride up the mountain (11.4 miles) and then for those interested we’ll do the 9.5 mile roundtrip run to the Observatory and back.
If you are going to do the run I would suggest that you park at the top of the mountain at Mother’s Restaurant and ride down to meet us. Or if you have a spouse/SO going that isn’t riding maybe they can shuttle your stuff up to the top for you. If you are parking at the bottom, DO NOT PARK AT THE TACO SHOP!!! The have asked that on weekends cyclists do not park in their small parking lot. Instead you should park at the Harrah’s Casino on Valley Center Road and ride the 1.5 miles to the start.
This is not necessarily a race, everyone will just ride their own pace, keep their own time, then change and run. We can then meet up afterwards at Mother’s for some of the best apple pie around.
If anyone has a spouse/SO that isn’t going to ride and wants to time everyone and if there is possibly anyone that wants to be a halfway aid station on the run, that would be great, otherwise everyone is basically on their own.
If you are going to start from the top, leave at least 30 minutes for the ride down to meet us at 9:30.
Also, remember that we turn the clocks forward Saturday night.
It will still be kind of chilly Sunday morning, around 49 degrees at the start and not much more then mid 50’s by the finish.
All ability levels are welcome whether it takes you 1 hour to do the climb or 2 hours to do it.
I’ll be meeting you at the bottom for the ride and run. My girlfriend wants to come and just do the run so she’s volunteered to take pics of the ride for us.
Funny how that bug always appears right before the Palomar climb, makes for some nice pre ride excuses…(-; I think Bjorn gets here today, and I’m going to point him your direction if he is willing. But I will make his excuse for him now, a miserable winter in Sweden, and he will be shot after his first few days here, riding his brains out at altitude…And he was probably sick too, so there you go…Probably not too much under an hour for him with all that…
We’re building up her D6 for testing right now. She’ll try a few different TT bikes at the velodrome, but they won’t release the results afterwards - we’ll just know the winner by what she ends up riding.
BTW, she can not only go up Palomar in under an hour, but she can descend and do it again a second time. Usually completes it in 57-58 minutes each time.

Shhhh…
I am shooting for something in the 1:10 - 1:15 range. Don’t want to go full out and save something for that run. 10 miles of running at altitude after riding up Palomar is going to be a bitch.

So what is that, about 2 x 60’ @ 5w/kg? That’s pretty serious!
