What is the “worlds bike time record” - store to store - for the Palomar Mt. hill? Any idea when the “pros” will be doing it again?
I am not sure what the “official” best time is for this climb. I have heard some numbers like a 48 minute time by Tony Romminger. They used to do an unoffical race up the mountain, store to store each September. Not sure if it was done this year or last. The last time I did it was in 2001 when Trent Klasna went 54:55 to win it handlily. My best time ever was 65 minutes that I have duplicated a couple of times over the years.
Thanks for the responses to Palomar Mt. hill ride - judging from the number of hits on this post - it looks like it may be time to do the ride again and maybe make a note at the top store - or would this take the mystic out of the ride?
I’d love to give it a go again even though I am no where near in any kind of bike shape. I’ve just been running the past 3 weeks. It will have to be soon though, they actually have a winter up there and it will be too cold soon, not for the climb but for the descent.
This is a climb that would be perfect for those new compact cranks.
Romminger didn’t go 48 minutes. I doubt that Lance could go that fast. As far as I know the time Klasna did is the fastest recorded time. The year before, the German guy who led off the bike at Ironman this year went about a minute and half slower, but in 20 degree hotter weather. I followed both rides, and I would say that they were pretty close, given the different weather conditions of heat and wind.

You mean Normann Stadler. There’s a piece on that ride somewhere on this site. He did it on the same bike he rode at Kona, a Look KG368, which is of course the choice of yours truly. Wish I could buy Normann’s heart, lungs, and legs, too…

I’d take any part of Normann…
OK, I had to say it before slowman said it for me. ** ;-)**
I heard that a bunch of people are doing the Palomar Mt. hill ride this Sunday, 9:00 AM (canceled if it is raining or snowing) - the first Sunday after Veterans Day. Maybe some of the top guns will be there and there will be an “official” record time - store to store .
