Pain on inside of Knee - RUNNING

Hi,

I’ve been focusing on swimming and running during the past 6 months (no biking or any other sports). I’ve been running much more than I have in the past and about a month ago started noticing a pain on the inside of my knee. It’s usually worst right after a run and can continue for a few days. It doesn’t seem to affect my running and even if i run on a day when it’s hurting, the pain tends to disappear during the run.

Anyone had this? The Net is telling me it could be meniscus or MCL tears, etc. but is this type of injury usually from twisting?

It can be quite painful, as it is now - to the point where i’m limping a bit.

Cheers, Cam

I had similar symptoms last fall. Running was OK but it would usually be sore after running. Biking was fine. Breast stroke in swimming hurt. It was my first knee injury after more than 30 years. I stopped running but when I started again it would get sore. Finally went to the doctor. MRI showed a small meniscus tear. Must have been wear and tear because I did not have any trauma. Had scope surgery last Thursday (took 15 minutes). Was back on my bike doing easy spinning on Sunday.

Thanks for the reply. I think a doctor’s visit after the Sun Run 10k at the end of the month is in order.

I’m dealing with same feeling/pain after taking a 1 month hiatus from running and then jumping back into it. I keep resting, elevating and icing it but even a 2 week break then SLOW 2 mile run causes pain. What kind of Dr. did you go to for the MRI and surgery?

Had this as well after taking some time off and jumping too hard back into it. My case was tendonitas and strengthening the hamstrings/pulling back the running intensity and re-ramping up helped clear it up. I was also icing/elevating but that only appeared to help curb the pain while doing either.

Same deal - no pain on bike, swim, or while running but shortly after running the inside/mid/slightly lower point on my left knee was very sore and it even hurt to fully extend my knee for a few days.

Just wanted to share my experience, obviously your mileage may vary.

If you didn’t have a traumatic event - ie, twisted and fell or did something awkward it’s probably inflammation in the joint (or the area surrounding) or a small meniscal tear. If you had a period of severe swelling and lost range of motion you could almost certainly point to a more significant tear. In your position, you can continue to try and rest, ice it, and use anti-inflammatories. It sounds like it’s been persistent so you might want to see an Orthopedic doctor/surgeon. My guess is they’ll want to do an MRI and then recommend treatment or surgical options from there. Good luck.

I’m having a similar problem. I haven’t been running consistently for over a month. I did a duathlon two weeks ago and about 1.5 miles into the first run, I could feel something in my knee. After that first mile-ish, it went away and I never felt it again during the day. Doing a breast stroke, I can feel it. It’s not a pain, but more of something is there and it is irritating to feel. I even went to a PT and he said he couldn’t tell me what was causing the pain in my knee. So I am clueless on what I need to do or what it might be.

Odd finding this thread…I have the exact same problem and have been tolerating it all the way through 70.3 Galveston. Finally had the MRI yesterday and discovered the meniscal tear. Still planning on IMTX in a few weeks but will not be setting any run records. Post race I plan on getting scoped and hopefully a good recovery. Much like the others no pain on the bike and swim. This aging stuff wears me out…literally!

I had this exact same thing. PT, ice, etc on the knee didn’t help. I didn’t get better until I focused on the hamstring and significantly reduced running km’s until it healed
