I’m getting a familiar pain around my big toe, and, while it’s not too bad now, with my planned training volume I want to figure out if I need to do anything differently so it doesn’t get worse.
This pain manifests on the portion of my toe that connects the “top”/toenail part to the foot itself. I guess it’s like the lower portion of a finger. I have had this problem on both big toes before, but not very often. The worst it’s ever been is after the two marathons I have run, particularly after the very first one, it was bad for a week or more and I thought it might be a stress fracture.
I am pretty sure this pain is connected to running - I ran last night for an hour, and at a pretty brisk pace for me, all on concrete. The toe did not hurt while running but hurts today. It hurts when I have to “push off” from my toes. Like if I were to flex my foot, or particularly if I’m driving and push my toes forward to accelerate.
Like I said, it’s not too bad now, but I don’t want it to get that way. Anyone have any ideas what this is? It hurts kind of on the “top” of the toe, not on the sole of my foot/toe. The only thing I’ve read that comes close is metatarsalgia, but that seems to be more on the foot itself and not the toes. And, if it is running-related, does that suggest that my form might need some work?
