I did a trail half marathon about a month ago when I started getting this pain just above my ankle bone to back. It started in the right ankle and now it’s in both ankle. The shoes that I run in is the same shoes that I’ve ran in for year. I purchase new shoes about every 6 to 8 months depending on mileage. I don’t think I’ve change my running gate. The only thing I know for sure that it hurts after running, no matter what surface I run on. I wouldn’t think much about, but now it’s starting to show its head when I ride. Any ideal what the pain is and the other big thing how to get rid of it?
exactly how long ago was that? a mouth huh? a lot can happen in a mouth…
Ms. 90th percentile says you need to stretch (more) - I am sooo helpful, I know…
See an orthopedic surgeon? I have ankles that sometimes just go out on me and I started getting a really sharp pain when riding. I started using a balance board to work my ankles and it seems to help. Or it was all in my head.
Can’t diagnose over the 'net - but…
Common things: pain behind the inside ankle bone = posterior tibial tendonitis. pain behind the outside ankle bone = peroneal tendonitis
Start by googling those, hit the conservative approach (PRICE) then see a professional if still symptomatic.
I’ll bump this.
I’ve had similar problems the last week. I did a seven mile running race and felt fine. I took several days off running afterweard just to be on the safe side. Then wednesday, I did a bike ride/tt in some crazy crosswinds/headwind. (I almost got tossed a couple times.) Thursday, I went running, and after about two miles I started to notice this incredible pain in my ankles. It felt like someone was driving a nail into the back of them. I managed to hobble, walk back to the car. My ankles were sore for the rest of the night. I took two days off, and when I tried to run yesterday, after a mile I started to feel them. So I quit and walked home. Walking isn’t nearly as bad as runing (in terms of pain.)
i have been experiencing the same thing. i have really cut down on my running. it starts out fine, then the ankle begins to feel inflamed.
i had a sports massage on saturday and had her really work on my legs. it’s helped somewhat to get all the knots out in my calves and thighs and I can now walk and run with my normal gait. i haven’t tried to run very far yet though. this has been super stressful b/c i have Columbia next weekend.
any chance it’s your shoes?
I’ve been wodering about that. Thaey’ve only got a couple hundred miles on them at the most. (I had the same model last year and they were fine for six hundred+ miles) They didn’t give me trouble before or during the race (and I put some pretty long runs in then.) Talking to a couple people, my guess is I messed it up riding. It was really windy, my cleats are getting close to being shot (I really wish I could afford some new speedplay cleats), and my seat may have been a bit low. Put all that togethor with riding sideways in a crosswind, and that might be my ankle problem.
Last year (2004) I had problems with my ankle and went to see an orthopedist that was a runner too.
I complained that my left ankle hurt on the inside right on the bony protrusion. After he took 3 X-rays and discussed them with me (I thought I had stress fractures) he started to feel around the inside of my ankle just behind the bone, it was a little tender to the touch but not too bad.
He claimed that I had an inflamed tendon that was putting pressure on a nerve that runs just under it, just like rroof mentioned (posterior tibial tendonitis). The way that I got it was from stressing that tendon and not supporting my arch.
The stresses probably came from
- The way I was running, trying pose without formal instruction and I was stomping
- Not running in the right shoe (with a poor running style)
- Ramping up volume too quickly
What I did to fix it
- Stopped Pose like running and went to quickly rolling my feet
- Got a shoe with a higher insole to support my non-existing arch
- Cut milage down and started to follow the 5-10% rule religiously
- Iced after every run or whenever I had a lot of time on my feet
- Took a few NSAIDS every once-in-a-while
Don’t know if this is your problem but maybe it could help
