Pain Cave Upgrade

Looking to replace my old cathode ray tube TV with a new flat screen in the pain cave. If I hook up my laptop to the tv (i’m assuming with HDMI cable) will I be able to view Trainerroad and a movie on the tv while on the trainer. My bigger question is, can I get wireless headphones that would work with the TV. I usually train in the early am and don’t want to have to crank the tv volume and wake everyone up.

The laptop should see the TV as a monitor so you should be able to have trainer road and a movie up just like you would on the laptop screen.

I’m not sure on the wireless headphones for the TV. You might be able to get the audio from the laptop.

I have a mac. I run an HDMI/MAC cable to my TV. I have been unlucky at finding a wireless headphone that works with my TV. However, I have been able to use both wireless and wired headphones thru my laptop when using Trainerroad.

If you are running everything off the laptop, you can use headsets through laptop. If you are watching content from TV as the source (cable, smart TV apps), you are going to have to find a way to take the audio out from the tv and run it to an amplification source, unless your TV has headset outputs. My Samsung smart TV did not have headset out so I ran audio to an old receiver and used that for ear buds. I used a 1/4" to 1/8" adaptor and splitter and ran wired to each bike station since we have 4 bikes. Each has it’s own volume control and jack. Not super elegant, but excellent sound and much better for hearing than all the fan and trainer noise and cranked speakers.

So if I understand you correctly, If I have Trainerroad and Netflix running on the laptop, have a HDMI cable from the laptop to the tv, I can watch everything on the TV and I can plug my headphones in the laptop and get the sound through them?

Depending on the laptop you may need to mute the HDMI output or it will play on both.

Plug your computer/laptop into the TV with HDMI. Anything and everything that is on the computer is shown on the TV as the TV is just a big monitor in that setup. Anything you can stream or play on the computer (e.g. Netflix or a DVD) can be viewed on the TV with the TrainerRoad data minimized to a strip at the bottom of the screen. The only thing you can not do without putting a TV tuner on your computer is watch live TV at the same time TrainerRoad is on the TV screen as they are two different inputs.

If you are connected with HDMI, the sound will automatically play through the TV with no extra cabling so any headphones hooked up to the TV will work without anything extra.

I bought a wireless keyboard so I can sit back on the couch in comfort and get everything going without hovering over the computer. http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG

Yes - if you use your laptop for whatever source you are viewing. That means just using your TV as a monitor only. This sounds like what you are doing and you should be fine.

The only time you need to do anything different is if you use the TV for the source material, like running Netflix through apps on smart tv, or watching cable tv using the tv or cable box tuner. This is what I do. TV for viewing and laptop with projector for data fields.

not necessarily true.

If you are going display port to HDMI not all versions of display port do sound.

If you are doing HDMI into a TV not all TVs will pass audio via HDMI to other sources, not sure if this includes head phone jacks, but many TVs will not output sound from the HDMI in via other outputs, same for some receivers.

I’ve got an LCD tv setup in my garage with a Visio sound bar. I use a HDMI to Thunderbolt cable to connect by Mac Book Air to the TV. I have to change the sound settings to transfer audio through the HDMI cable, but once I turn that on the sound comes through the sound bar which just has a mini audio cable connecting it to the TV.

When it’s super early or very late and I’m on the trainer, I just plug my beats headphones directly into the Laptop which is on a stand next to my trainer and I have audio coming through that while video is showing up on the TV (almost always netflix + trainerroad).

All you need is something similar to one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/TaoTronics-TT-BA01-Wireless-Bluetooth-Transmitter/dp/B004B8GF7Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1417546722&sr=1-1&keywords=bluetooth+transmitter

Pair it with a pair of bluetooth headphones and you should be good to go regardless if you’re getting your audio from the TV or the Laptop.

This. Exact one I have plugged into my TV and paired with my headphones.

Both my husband and I have a pair of Jaybird Bluebuds X (http://www.jaybirdsport.com/bluebuds-x-bluetooth-headphones/) in different colors that we use with a bluetooth transmitter when we are on the treadmill and on the computrainer. We have two separate bluetooth transmitters because I couldn’t figure out how to get them to connect to two headphones (even though both said they would connect to multiple devices). So we have the GoGroove Transmitter (http://www.amazon.com/GOgroove-BlueSense-Wireless-Bluetooth-Transmitter/dp/B008GVETNE/) and Monoprice Transmitter (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AJHAYCS/). We use it primarily with our Blueray Player & Roku but it also works for anything that has a headphone jack or you can get an audio 2 x RCA “Y” Audio Cable which should work with any TV (http://www.amazon.com/3-5mm-Stereo-Female-Y-Cable-6-Inch/dp/B000I23TTE/). You do have to make sure you pay good attention to the directions in how to pair the headphones with the transmitters. I’m happy with them… worst part is remembering to charge them after my workout so they are good to go next time. Losing audio 2 hours into a 3 hour training ride sucks.

Have you all had any issues with your tv displaying the proper aspect ratio as an extended monitor? I can’t seem to get the settings to work right on two of my tv’s, even with tweaking the desktop properties once hooked up. Is this a “tv setting” that needs to be changed?

Just an update to my original post. Got a new 48" flat screen from Santa. Installed it over the weekend and was planning on getting an HDMI cable to hook it up to the laptop. When I opened the TV box, there was an ad for Roku. Same thing as Apple TV, Google Chromecast, etc. Looked it up online. The new Roku 3 comes with a remote control and a pair of headphones which plug into the remote and transfer the tv sound to the headphones. Thought that was a pretty simple way get what I wanted without bluetooth headphones. I’m going to keep the laptop to view trainerroad and will just use the tv for Netflix, youtube videos while riding. The Roku was $90 at Bestbuy. A 25’ HDMI cable (was planning on running above the drop ceiling to conceal it) was going to run about $60. For $30 more I get a bunch more channels to watch on Roku, no wires and wireless headphones.

For your $90 you could have gotten an AppleTV to hook up to your TV and used AIrPlay (assuming your Mac is new enough, if not there are 3rd party alternatives)…

Having had an Apple TV and a Roku, I think you made the correct decision.

I like the headphone in the remote. Wish mine had that…

You can def. Get hdmi for chapter than that.

That was the cheaper cable. Bestbuy had one for $140, Walmart had it for $60. I also have Apple TV on another tv in the house. I like the Roku option because of the wireless headphone option. Most of my training is early AM and I don’t want to wake the kids.

You can def. Get hdmi for chapter than that.

Amazon’s 25 foot HDMI cable for $17 shipped if you have Prime.
