Anyone know any good sites to go to to self diagnose hip pain or pain around the hip? I think it has something to do with the muscles aroud the hip?
Thee are several common causes of hip pain. You’re probably better off to see a good PT or chiro rather than self diagnosis. Here’s a basic primer site
Depending on what it is, a PT or chiropractor won’t be able to diagnose as well as a sports med physician or orthopedist. I was having hip/groin pain and was referred to PT, which made it worse, and ended up seeing several physicians before I could get a referral to an orthopedic surgeon, who was able to diagnose it right away after seeing my X-rays. So definitely go to your primary care physician first, and if s/he can’t figure out, make them give you a referral to a specialist.

I get pain around the hip area from a tight IT band. When it first started I would have never thought it would be IT Band. Doc and PT confirmed it. With stretching and ice I can keep it under control.
What was your diagnosis. Herniated disk L4-s1, s1-s2?
Just curious, I suffer similar issues.
Femoroacetabular impingement, bilateral: http://www.hipfai.com
I had surgery to correct it, and just last Thursday (one day shy of 6 months post-op) went for my first jog in over a year.

Mine was at S1/L5 and L4/5…went to doc cause I thought I had a stress fracture in my hip. Duh!
Am almost 6 months out from my 2-level microdiscectomy and ran a 23 min 5K on Saturday. Still have a little more than 30 sec per mile to shave off to get back to where I was, but my pain is MUCH less both running and living.
Wish bike was coming back as well…sigh.

Yes, that’s my issues L4/L5, L5/S1…I had a epidural shot of some sort a little over a year ago. I was able to compete on the bike most of last year, although w/ some main but manageable. It’s been getting worse again, I"m debating another shot or the procedure you had. I think I"m going to wait until I can’t train and pick one of the two. I only bike race, there is no way I could run.
Good luck to you…
Doctor’s always the best idea - but you can try changing your routine a bit and see what happens. I hip and “ass” pain near the end of last season, so I started a legs workout after my last race and it has done wonders. I hadn’t worked my legs since starting triathlon other than bike/run. Start with light weights. Now I squat, lunge, do quad and ham string curls, calf raises - followed by a brisk 3 mile run. One workout a week. I’m very happy with the results for both running and cycling right now. Pain is gone. Everyone has an opinion for whether or not to put a weight routine into your training - so take it for what it’s worth. (and I think the lunges with 20 lb dumb bells have yielded the best results).
I’m recovering from a hip pain that I finally got diagnosed after months of dull pain, and then suddenly the pain got sharp 3 weeks ago. it hurt to walk and there was no way I could run. Thank god biking didnt hurt!! It was kinda my hip/ass/lower back that was hurting. Went to a sports doctor and he said my pelvic alignment was off and that I was essentially bruising the cartilage at the joint of the sacrum and pelvis. Told me to do these squat exercises to bring my alignment back and that the cartilage just needs to heal. No pain now walking, running is still a little uncomfortable…but getting better!!
Get your pelvic alignment and leg length checked!
Agreed, Leg Length is the root cause of my issues. I have a structural 10mm difference possibly due to a compound fracture of my leg and ankle 17 years ago.
