bump.
I’m here. I saw it while on my bike - absolutely unbelievable. It’s been variously reported as the University Ave bridge, the Washington Ave bridge, and the 35W bridge. It’s definately the 35W bridge.
CNN is reporting 3 dead, which is actually an amazingly small number for a major interstate bridge collapsing.
We live about 7 blocks from the bridge and drive that thing every single day. We were out biking when it happened…unreal.
Unreal. Saw the news about an hour ago. Do they know what happened? Was it the section that was being repaired?
They were in the midst of re-surfacing both sides of the bridge, along with that whole section of the highway…
6 confirmed dead, at least 1 person still missing.
I’m glad uncle phil is ok since he lives even closer than I do to that bridge. I had just finished swimming at the Y dtown and was going to go running from 5:30-6:30 - usually I go running down the river right under the bridge that collapsed and considering that it fell at 6:05 I’m sure I would have been down there…but ended up going thru loring park to the lakes instead.
I did go down there on my bike and unreal is the correct term. From the 7 corners side you can see the highway heading up towards the 4thst/univ exit and then it just drops - I saw on the news of a person hitting the gas (and surviving cause of it) when they saw cars disappearing in the rearview mirror.

Im good…
we live about 3 miles from there…glad Uncle Phil and wife are ok…
unbelievable…
Yeah, I was just down there as well. Unreal is right…I can’t beleive how many people are down there trying to get a look. Thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.
Same kind of deal here. We had two routes we were going to do tonight…one would have taken us under the bridge twice. Fortunately we picked the other route. And what’s really weird is that I snapped a chain on the way back and was waiting forever for my wife to finish riding home and then come get me in the car. At the time I had no idea what on earth could have been taking her so long to get back to me.
Glad that you and your lovely new wife are ok as well!
It has been years since I lived in Mpls, met my wife on campus two blocks from the bridge. The two things that I have always remembered about that bridge is how unbelievably icy it gets in the winter, and the shake that I could feel while driving over it at slow rush hour speed when a large vehicle would pass in the oncoming lane.
My prayers to anyone even remotely involved in this tragedy.
Checking in. I work about 1-2 miles from that bridge. Drive over it all the time… Crazy. ![]()
fyi, for all the runners/cyclists -looks like the only way to get from the southside over to dtown will be over by the franklin bridge (or you can also take the path next to light rail over by valspar) - also crafty told me this am that stone arch is closed so if you are going over to NE from dtwon the only way is thru the hennepin bridge…
Washington Ave. Bridge from the south and the 3rd Ave/Central Bridge from the north are the closest detours. They do have the Stone Arch closed as well as the hidden pedestrian bridge upriver from Washington…
I work at the U, and so I drive it frequently. Very very surreal.
