P4 Gadget Advice

Ok So I have just brought a new P4 frame. LBS is transffering my 2008 P3C components over to the P4, anyone got any advice on any accessories I may need to add? My P4 build will include HED Blackdog Abars, Standard Durace/FSA components from my P3C plus Fizzik Arrone Tri 2 saddle…

One thing I am still trying to figure out is a hydration solution for IM racing. Anyone whom own a P4 got any suggestions? On the P3C for Racing I ran a profile design aero bottle set up between the bars and a Arundel aero bottle on the downtube with infinit. For training same as above but replaced the Arundel bottle with a Zipp carbon holder.

Ummm…P4 bottle for the Infinit and mount a regular bottle between your arms using the new Hed bottle mount?

Tom thanks, Is this the one you refer too? just googled it. Not sure that would work for me as I have my power computer strapped on teh stem or can you shift it between the bars?

When I was at Canada I test rode one of the P4’s and the cervelo dudes had the bottle on a vision board strapped between the aerobars similar to the below. They mentioned this as the best solution as the profile aerobottle which I currently have on my P3 is not a good option for the P4 as it negates the benefits of the aero headset. Do you agree? One issue I see with the between the arms system is how do you refill it? The bottles they provide at the IM aide stations aren’t regular bike bottles, on a hot day like Canada I must have gone through 7 bottles of water would take a lot of time to transfer into a bike bottle.

Yeah I was thinking about the built in P4 bottle as a solution for the infinit it just looks a long way to reach that is all…I am assuming no issues running a bento box in the usual place for puncture repair kit?

Oh Jack, you’ve got to do something with that cable routing! Everything else is so aero.

what? on mine or hers?

help!

=)

A regular bottle cage between the aerobars is way better than the HED contraption, which mounts along the stem. That’s what I use, and the Gatorade sportsbottles fit fine in there. That’s exactly what I did for the bottles I picked up on the course during IMC.

The profile aerodrink is an abomination on any bike, let alone a bike with a good aero front end.

Thxs that looks like a good option I have a spare Zipp carbon bottle holder…just gotta figure out the whole how do I refill at water stops. That was always the good thing with the profile aerobottle just dump the water from the aide station straight in the top…

easy, start the race with a bottle you dont care about

at the pickup point, toss it
grab the gatorade bottle
put it in the holder

repeat =)

Can you post an up close pic of how you mounted the bottle cage?

its real simple

lay a cage of your choice between your aero bars. some models work better than others. Vision did/does sell one that works especially well for this purpose.

get some zip ties

attach it to your bars using your best judgement. 4 zipp ties placed intelligently will do the trick.

some bottle holders you might want to cut bits off for a better fit.

if your forearms are real short, this may not work for ya =)

I was being somewhat facetious, sorry.

But I do think that your brake cable routing could be better. Could you take the rear brake cable on the other side of the headtube and shorten the housing?

hehe

what really bugs me are the upturns on the brake levers

but there is no cheap solution except cutting up an aluminum vision bar…and those aren’t quite as thin on the basebar

sigh!

.

Thanks for posting this. I’m not entirely clear (and I’m sorry–I know you’ve been through this a lot), but is the nozzle of the bottle facing toward your stem? What cage are you using? I tried mounting a Spesh MTB cage for security and I could hardly get the bottle out.
Thanks.

i have the nozzle pointed away from me, as my bars angle up a bit. it also tends to give your hands more room

Trek Batcage (with a minor modification - the elastic across the top). It’s just a normal cage, and the bottom of the cage is attached the front of them stem, so the bottle is pointed away.

Here’s mine. It’s a $7.99 eBay Catamount Cage and 4 zip ties. Fairly light, super sturdy, and of course ST aero approved!

What about the HED system is bad? I have no room for a bottle between my aerobars due to my giant edge 705 computer.
