P3 SL factory config - component question

Hi folks,

About to order a P3 SL, any comments on the components?

http://www.cervelo.com/bikes/2005/P3-SL.html

The wheels seem sub-par, else it looks great. Thoughts?

Sub par compared to what? Cervelo (and most other manufacturers) assume that you don’t necessarily want to be stuck with their idea of a $1500 aero wheelset, so they give a good, durable, relatively light set for all around training use. Also, a significant number folks shopping for that type of bike will already have race wheels.

It is the for the same reason that high-end bikes don’t include pedals.

Overall, parts spec is nice. I am not overly crazy about the tires they have specced, nor with the brake levers. There are some much nicer offerings out now at the same price, and some really nice ones for a few bucks more. Would also be nicer with one of the new style integrated cranks a la Dura Ace 10, but really you will never notice a difference.

Overall, though, nice bike. Enjoy.

Thanks,

I should have clarified - “sub-par” in relation to the rest of the components (D/A, etc) and comparing whether to buy a frame and build up or start with the factory setup, I can always upgrade later.

But then again maybe Velomax Vistas are great and I just don’t know…

I think the Vistas are the absolute best wheels, bar none. Are they fancy? No. Are they extremely expensive? No. But we have had no warranty issues with them. There is only one thing I look for in a training wheel, and that is that it stays in one piece. The vast majority of people who race on P3s are going to do that on different wheels than are spec’d anyway, so it makes the most sense to spec a bomb proof wheel as a training wheel.

This reminds me of Simon Whitfield, he always asked for the heaviest training wheels possible so it would really feel special when he put the race wheels on. Makes sense, although the Vistas actually aren’t that heavy, they’re pretty average weight.

Thanks Gerard.

The order for my P3 SL was placed today, can’t wait!
