P3 - How close - rear wheel to the frame?

I’m sure this has been discussed many times before but…

How close do you guys put the rear wheel to the frame. Want to get it close but not too close.

Thanks.

Hey Tibbs…weren’t you NOT allowed to talk about the process of you getting a bike??? Quick - edit the post so you don’t hurt your chances!

I don’t know the right answer to this, but the correct answer is don’t get too close. I totally screwed my IM race last year by screwing up this adjustment. My wheel was rubbing my frame for 107 miles before my braindead self realized what was going on. Did anyone here see a moron diddling with his back wheel in the pouring rain on the final climb back into town? Probably not since I was way behind most of your grandmothers.

I never specifically checked this adjustment when I got the bike from the shop. I did test out the bike for a day or two before the race, and I had no problem whatever.

When you set the gap, make sure it is large enough to accomodate your spare tire as well.

Don’t cut this parameter too close. It is not worth it for any immeasurable advantage. I have now rigged the adjustment screws to prevent my trashing a race this way again.

Anyone get the feeling I am still royally ticked at myself?

Rubbed raw in Florida,

Same as ajfranke, I had mine too close on short race last year. It rained just a enough that the wet tire picked up every piece of sand or gravel and it would rub all the way around. I could hear it the entire ride. Now I give it that extra 1/4 inch to be safe.

Aloha,

Larry

The screws on my P2K do not go far enough to even get the tire close enough for me. I am planning on cutting them down a bit, but I like knowing there is no way for my tire to hit the frame no matter what (long screws).

Thanks.

Based on your responses, maybe closer if it is a clean dry course, but leave a gap for wet conditions?

I realize the Cervelo concept of putting the rear wheel close is supposed to be aero, but use your brains folks. If a grain of sand makes a difference in whether your wheel will rub or not is pretty stupid. Tire pressure changes during a race, wheel
trueness, wheel flex in cornering all make more than a mm or two difference.
Do you really thing it is faster to have your wheel that close? If so, tell me the difference between 1/2 inch, 3/8 inch 1/4 inch or 3mm in your 40k and Ironman splits. I ride a fixed gear bike and TT in it all the time, and haven’t noticed any difference over the past 35 years or or so in moving the wheel in from say 3/4 inch. I have seen people stopping to adjust their Cervelos rearend because it was too close.
I think Gerard designed a good frame in the P3 and P2, but risking rubbing your wheel on the frame is a pretty big one for an important race. G

Per Cervelo’s website. 3mm to 5 mm

Cheers!

Trevor

No issues with my Renn disc. I haven’t measured but I’m guessing I’m running about 4-5mm clearance. All my races have been dry weather though.
