P3 cable routing questions

is there any way to stop the internal cable chatter on rough roads? also, should there be cable housing from where the front derailleur cable exits near the BB to the derailleur? my mechanic installed mine without any but it looks like there might be a danger of cutting the cable with the way it’s rubbing against the edge of the hole.

Yes there is. You can either use some small diameter heat shrink tubing or neoprene on the cables inside the downtube. It works for mine. No more annoying rattling/chatter.

I don’t get any chatter from my p2k, do you have your cables too slack?

My P2k has got housing from the bottom bracket to just below the front der.

The P3 front der. cable routing around the BB is different than on the P2K.

It needs no housing around the BB.

If the cable is rubbing the rear of the BB shell as it goes back up through the frame, just install a short piece of cable liner over that section of cable. That should solve it.

As for the noise…Possibly to much slack in your cables.

thanks for all the replies but the newer model p3’s cables are routed differently now. housings are no longer inserted into the holes so i now it’s not slack housing. can my cables be slack if my shifting is flawless???

also, both derailleur cables now go down the downtube, out near the bottom of the BB shell, and a cable guide (like on roadbikes) routes the front derailleur cable through the BB shell then out a hole on the seat tube (above the shell). as it comes out of this hole, this is where i was wondering if housing is necessary as it looks like the cable is rubbing on the hole’s edge.

Dock,

I posted a tip on cable routing that i solved in Feb. when I got my 2004 P3 which i built up myself. Take same spare STI cable and cut a 5" piece. Take a knife and strip the outside plastic, next the wires will come off. You are left with the inner bit of the STI cable. Now feed the FD cable at the bottom where it comes out of the down tube through your cut piece. Then the slide the cut piece through the “eye” that goes up to the FD. Leave the extra bit to run up the down tube, this also helps to keep the FD clean under the frame. Remember to put some lube in before routing the cable through. This technique WILL improve your shifting AND protect the frame! I’ve had mine installed initially without - this technique does work a treat!

As for the slack noise, i have no such problems!?

thanks, will give it a shot!
