Anyone else looked at this? 5 mile swim. They are in the process of “expanding” the field from 58 swimmers.
didn’t see this but I’m interested for sure.
Not for 2015 but would be totally interested at some point in my career. Don’t have the $$$ now
The $2800 fundraising obligation is a bit steep. Also, the rd notified the field after taking applications. Sort of a bat and switch, but i may still do it, if i get admittied.
It looks interesting. I wouldn’t swim 5 miles, but my wife might be interested.
How do the support boats work? There is a boat, towing a dinghy, with a bunch of swimmers following it.
And that’s ridiculous. Just show up and swim. Start from the other end so you can see everyone as you pass by them.
Local pro Samantha Kennedy is doing this - sounds like an adventure!

My GF was one of the first selected to do this swim and we are looking forward to it. It should be an epic event.
It was never a bait and switch, we knew about the fundraising since July, just not the amount. Fundraising is going to support Habitat for Humanity.

The local law enforcement will pluck you out of the water and give you a nice fine.
Most people would probably find it difficult to swim against the current under the bridge.
That sounds terrible. I thought Colorado was bad with all there private reservoirs and no swimming, but that’s a great lake! Sounds like more “we’re government, we know whats best for you”…

Many barges, freighters and cruise ships go through here. Though I agree, anyone should have the right to kill themselves. Though having someone do it for you (by means of getting run over) is kind if cruel to the other person.

Interested for sure but not sure if I’ll be “there” with my swimming. Fund raiser requirement is a bit steep.

Ok, I can understand that. If there is large boat traffic in one direction, then I would equate that to running across a highway. In general though, I would like to have the right to do many very dangerous things to myself provided it does not affect the safety of others. Things like cliff jumping, swimming in a lake or ocean, and maybe even occasionally eating a bacon sandwhich on gluten-rich GMO bread…
I know this was from a few days ago but yes, there are shipping lanes that you have to cross.

He’s a friend of ours and that’s how we had prior knowledge of the swim.

The Straights of Mackinac is no reservoir
This bad boy ran aground there a couple weeks ago. High winds blew it off course. It is certainly a swimmable body of water on the right day if you have some skills but it also could be a death trap if you are not careful.

Not to mention the dodging the occasional small car getting blown off the bridge…
