Does anybody else have the problem with the velcro collar of their wetsuits ripping the baby hairs out on the back of your neck? I’ve tried lubing up my hair with Body Glide and have worn two caps. Inevitably, the little hairs get woven into the velcro and yank for the next 20 minutes or so…
The back of my neck got so scraped from the velcro of my Orca Predator II it was openly bleeding durring the bike part of IMFL. Healing was memorable with the dried sea salt, sunburn and constant moving of my head stretching and reopening the scar. I love this sport.
last year at one tri where I wore my wetsuit I had a NASTY gash in the back of my head that burned like hell while I was running. I presumed it was the haircut I got the night before but dang… I wonder if I ripped off hair in my haste in taking off the wetsuit… hmm…
How about a bandage? Never tried this but a bit of tegaderm on there - does not pull out hair which is why I recommended it. Also for the poster with the raw neck, tegaderm is a good dressing for that.
the wetsuit is my lifejacket! I’ve just been living with the pain! if there is someway I can tape it, I’d do it! but, that would probably be more painful to take off.
Tegaderm is a dressing that I use for road rash. It can be placed on road rash until new skin forms. This is long enough for hair to grow underneath (if this area was shaved). Pulling tegaderm off at this point does not pull off any hair, new or old. Because the adhesive is relatively weak, I am not sure if it will stand up to much friction. If the neck area is low friction but just contact it might work.
Seriously, have you considered changing wetsuits? Maybe find a brand or a size that doesn’t put the zipper and velcro so close to such a sensitive area.
I do have the hairdresser shave the whispy hairs on the back of my neck because they break off at about 3-4 inches and never get long enough to tuck into a high-on-my-head ponytail. It works out pretty well on race day or when I’m working out, and when I don’t have it pulled up, you can’t see the buzzed bit.
