Man, what a sad way to finish the race. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. Anyway, Barry said he’s ok now.
That’s very scary. Happened just 2 weeks ago to American Tommy Zafares at PATCO Dallas, and I think he was in hospital for 3-4 days (health all good now). Tough day for the Americans on a tough course.
very dramatic, especially coz he was winning - good for him for staggering across in third - glad he’s okay, kind of scary to see that happen.
Was the massive amount of dnf’s also due to the heat?
Yeah it was the heat.
I know a few guys who were racing and it was brutal. Nearly half the men’s field DNF’ed.
That sounds terrible. What were the temps like?
Water temp was mid-20s celcius (68F) and 33 (91F) at 8am for the women’s race. ~10 degrees higher for the men’s race.
Ouch.
Fastest run was 33:39. From a guy who is regularly running mid 31s. Most of the men’s field was in the 35-40min range, and many of them are normally 32:xx types.
Heat plus a brutal bike course.
Good to hear that the guy is ok. A bit scary actually to see what can happen to some of these guys who are among the best trained athletes in the world.
