So it is the final lap of my mountain bike race, about 85 degrees, and I am with a group of guys from the same team on a flat section heading into the home stretch:
One guy calls out: “Who’s up for a beer after the race?”
His teammate yells: “We’re in a state park, you’re 20 & I am a cop.”
.
When I first moved back here to New Zealand, our neighbours invited our kids to a party, since their kids were a similar age. Their kids were 14&15 and ours were about 14&12. The parents said the kids were not allowed to bring any booze to the party! “No Sh*t”, we said. The parents replied “We’re providing the alcohol so we can keep tabs on how much the kids drink”.
The drinking age here is just 18 (too low if you ask me) and there is a major under-age drinking problem here. They don’t just have a few either, but 15 year olds routinely get platered at major parties, with hundred of gate crashers, then have the nerve to hurl bottles at the cops when they finally do arrive. The cops don’t have guns here so the kids have nothing to fear. IF they do get busted, the judge invariably lets them off.
I don’t condone underage drinking (outside the home) but 20 years old, having a quite one after a MTB race. Not as bad as Iran/Contra is it?
