Ovality!

If the pros do it! Off season has hit so now’s the time to play around with new stuff.

I figured if they feel good, power increase sustained over a long period of time would likely occur simply because comfortable = faster, as long as they aren’t a detriment. But what about the ratios? Since they’re supposed to make it easier on the upstroke, the tooth counts are different. For a 53/39 130BCD, what would that equate to?

Q rings: 52/39, 53/39, 53/42, 54/42, 54/44…?
Osymetric: 52-54-56; 42/44?

I’m not a super powerful climber, but I can push a standard up a hill decently enough. I’ve read that Q rings are less finnicky with shifting than osymetrics so I’m leaning towards a 53/39 Q anyways. Thoughts?

I had qrings on my TT bike last season and i did like them a lot. I can now NOT ride with them without my knee hurting. I have tried making the power phase a little less aggresive but the sudden force seems to be too much load for my knee. I went back to the regular rings and its gone…

so, in short:
i like my qrings a lot–supports/ promots a mashing style of riding.

shifting performance is slightly hesitant but sharp when you have everything dialed in

did you try different ocp settings?

I had the exact opposite experience and I know many others that feel the same. Monitoring power I consistently had drops and inconsistencies with regular rings in addition to some pain. All of that disappeared shortly after my transition to q rings. I’ve tried many of the elliptical rings, but have always like the q rings best. I think the shift quality is better in addition to the stiffness of the chainrings themselves. I am currently in the process of switching from regular q rings to the qxl just to test it out. Whether I like the qxl better than the q rings or not, I know I will never go back to plain round. Its worth it to try them out and see what you think. I dont think I personally know of anyone that went back to round though.
