Heard this morning that due to the obesity epidemic that airlines have had to “supersize” the average weight used to calculate flight info. Men’s average weight has been upgraded from 185 to 200. 15lbs and roughly 8%. However women have been upgraded from an average of 145 to 179 lbs. This is 34 lbs and a 23% increase.
Granted this is not a “scientific” study but I would assume that the calculations are based on some “factual” information.
Not sure where I’m going with this except to say the above seems to match what I see in the general population. Men have always seemed to be carrying a bit of “extra pounds”. Granted they have added a few more over the past 20-30 years, however women seem to have gone from “Fairly thin” as a whole, to mostly chubby.
In fact it seems, particularly in the younger population, “chubby” in the female gender, has become vogue. OTOH you seem to ahve a similar mixture, only slightly larger, of fat and skinny guys as 20 years ago.
That can’t be true. I cannot believe the average man weights 200 pounds. And the average weight for a woman cannot be anywhere close to 179, that is huge for a woman.
Where do you live because I need to make sure I do not move there - or if I have a connecting flight through there I need to make sure I get an isle seat.
I’m sure most of this crap comes from surveys. Do you think everyone is honest on them? Women have probably been lying for years saying they’re -34lbs (23%) than their actual weight. Guys, you know you like to pretend you’re bigger, but we exaggerate less. (ie. 8%) So I’m guessing now someone actually looks at the people while they do the survey, and after they collected them write “probably weighs more” next to the “weight” column.
“Who’s the bigger liars, men or women? … Men lie the most, women tell the biggest lies.”
Chris Rock
(he goes on to explain how women wear high heels, put on makeup, tight clothes etc.)
Yeh I have no idea where the weights came from. Could be as you suggested that women are just carrying on more. OTOH I would not suspect that there would be that large of a difference in carry on’s from men to women, but certainly could be.
As an aside a quick search turned up the average “Max weight” of women to be 158 and for men to be 185. Weight is less than this at a younger age and older age. The max weight age being around 50yrs old.
I’d suspect TNO being down would be a net loss from all the crying. However long term could be gain due to long term depression and ensueing additional caloric intake.
…However women have been upgraded from an average of 145 to 179 lbs. …
Wow, that means I’m finally BELOW AVERAGE, woohoo!
However… that’s just wrong. I’m 5’11"+, I should weigh more than the average woman. Not good.
On another note: I agree about the recent horrible fashion travesty of low cut jeans and high-cut tops. Sorry, but there are maybe 2% of all women who can actually wear that. Unfortunately, an awful lot of the other 98% still try it— usually the ones who can least pull it off. Just makes you want to pull the poor things aside and kindly advise them, “Consider a mirror.”
Used to contract for a comapny that had a private jet. We made regular trips back and forth to Detroit.
On several trips I went with a guy that used to work for the company that designed and built the plane. He’d inform me of all the “Screw ups” and design flaws. As well as all the interesting facts like “Do you know how many bolts hold this wing on”
I think this is the average weight with carry on luggage. In that case, maybe women are just bringing more carry on’s?
If it is with carry-ons then it makes a lot more sense. That explains why my fiancee always has a carry-on that weights 50 pounds, which she cannot carry so I get stuck with it.
That can’t be true. I cannot believe the average man weights 200 pounds. And the average weight for a woman cannot be anywhere close to 179, that is huge for a woman.
these weights include 16 lbs. for carry-on items as well as clothing which was estimated at 10lbs in winter. Still, they seem high to me. People need to get off the Kraft and hydrogenated oil. They’re killing us all.
