I have a Porsche magazine collection (Excellence) that I am going to sell and I have no idea what price I should be looking for. There are 130 issues in the collection. The issues go for $5 newsstand price and a back issue price of $8. I have 5 issues in the collection that are not available through back issue ordering. Also, issues 1-106 are in official Excellence binders that run $8 each. I calculate replacement value somewhere between $650 and $1100. I realize that it is worth whatever I can get for it, but I just want to have an idea what I should expect. Should I expect somewhere just south of $650 or somewhere in between the values above?
I drive a vintage MGB. My mechanic is exclusively british car. He has some sets of focused magazines like these. But other than such a person, how will you find the individual who would be willing to shell out that kind of cash for such a particular product?
Sounds like this one is made for an e-bay auction. I can say that there is no way in hel# I would pay anywhere near that for MG journals.
Let’s be honest. Randy’s answer is correct. Whatever you can get somebody to pay.
A more painfully honest answer is that it’s worth nothing. Absolutely nothing. I have a collection of about 3,000 comic books. Their “value” is over $10,000. The only way I could get more than $1,000 for them would be to sell them at a convention, which I don’t have the patience for, or if I was to set them on fire and then report them stolen.
Look on eBay and in your Car Classifieds to see if anyone else is selling them, otherwise, look at what other magazine collections are selling for. That could help. Otherwise, I suspect that if you try to sell them for near cover price, you won’t get a single call. Generally, books and magazines resell for much less than original cover.
I remember that magazine since I owned a pair of Porsche 356B’s back in the 80’s. Should never have sold them because now they’re just too collectible expensive for me to ever own another.
Maybe your best bet might be to put the collection up on ebay.
JohnT…there are quite a few Porschephiles out there that are interested in these magazines and other reference materials, there are a whole group of folks that travel to Porsche events trading/buying these things. I am glad you said that there was no way in hell that you would pay that price though, as that’s what I want to know (all opinions wanted), Thanks.
Randy…what the market will bear is what I was feeling when I stated, “I realize that it is worth whatever I can get for it”, You, jmorrissey, and Cerveloguy have it best when you mentioned eBay.

And that is why I mention the MGB affinity. It is exactly the same for MG owners. I have been to these events. I have MG signs in my garage, MG books, some MG-logoed clothing, and I have done more than a few shows and rallys. That is why I though my opinion might be relevant as opposed to just talking out my as#.
I was just joking. I was a member of the Toronto Triumph Club and we had quite a friendly rivalry with the MG club. I also owned an MGB and MG Midget at different times.
When I got divorced I sold my toys. Someday I’ll have another one, probably a TR6.

I’m sorry JohnT, I didn’t want my reply to come across as a smartass or in your face. I truly value your opinion so Thank You. There certainly is an affinity amongst these people who love their MGs, Triumphs, Porsches, Ferraris, etc aren’t there. I still love Porsches, but I find that I am much healthier and happier with the hobby of tri, not to mention I just don’t have time for it anymore.
Was never much of a fan of the TR7, especially the original coup but I loved my TR8 convertible with the 3.5 litre V8. My buddy had a Sunbeam Tiger at the time and we used to take our V8’s to all the car shows and British car events. I really miss it sometimes.
I know many other 911, 996 folks who would buy that collection, or parts there of. I know that I would buy if you have articles on 2002 996’s. I really like the comparison artilcles…996 -vs- F360 - Viper - Shelby Series 1 - GT2 and on and on and on. Good reading, over and over. Most folks you would find are very year specific, and the Air Cooled guys have that snooty attitude about “What a Porsche is *SUPPOSED *to be”.
It was just my age and the era in which I lived as a young sports car enthusiast. New cars don’t interest me near as much as the older ones. They were much simpler then and you could work on them yourself. I’d prefer an old Porsche over a new one.
I was at a track where a couple guys took out their 2.5 (NA) engine - re built it and put it back in…on the side of the road. Try that with the new 3.6! (I sure wont)…but I LOVE loud blow off valves and will mess with some stuff (Turbos, Intakes, Exhausts, BOV, Boost Controllers and what not)
The following went for $30 on ebay. There was only one bidder, though:
