A friend of mine asked me to find out the significance of the odd logo on the cover of the newest Dave Matthews Band album, Stand Up.
I am told the logo or icon has some mystic or spiritual significance. This is what it looks like if you are unfamiliar with it.
Do any of you guys know the significance of this symbol/icon? I swear- it’s easier to get Bin Ladin’s cell phone number…

I am not a hardcore DMB fan, I just know that the firedancer logo has been around for a long time.
I’ll poke around and see what else I can come up with.

Yup. I found out it is the fire dancer logo. That has been about it so far. I feel like an idiot.
There’s a girl with that same phone number. Now what was her name again?..
I don’t think that there is much more to it than that. I think that the fire dancer has been around since…well…the beginning of the DMBand. Maybe they inlcuded it on the new album in hopes of recapturing the magic of the previous albums…
…too bad it didn’t work.
My 2 cents - not his best album ever. I gave it a couple of turns and decided that there is other music I’d rather listen to.

The firedancer is a Dave Matthews original artwork. A long time ago, when trying to come up with merchandise logos, someone asked Dave to draw what he saw when he looked into the crowd. He drew the firedancer. He said he saw people just letting go and dancing crazy and having a good time. That is where the firedancer came from and what it represents - what Dave sees in his audience.
The design of the album cover is now known, too. It will be, simply, the firedancer symbol, rendered in silver rather than flame, on a black background. It’s the result of an artistic collaboration between long-time DMB designer Thane Kerner and Stefan Lessard.

the Firedancer is also mentioned in one of his songs from an earlier album…maybe under the table and dreaming…give me a couple of hours and it’ll come back.

That’s not a firedancer. It’s a sculptural piece inspired by the people on the Chicago ferry boat that got “showered” with 800 gallons of human waste that DM’s bus driver ejected on a bridge a few years back. That’s how they looked as they were walking off the boat…
