OT - Need help naming new puppy

I got my wife a new puppy for valentine’s day and we can’t seem to come up with a good name. We’ve had him since Saturday and can’t seem to find anything we like. He’s a 5 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback/mix.

Killer!

Cody - the name of the best dog I ever had…

Comeback----Friend of mine always said it would be a good name for a dog. I always think of it every time I see a dog that isn’t trained very well and is running down the street with it’s master chasing behind yelling COMEBACK.

Pictures?

My male lab’s name is Buck.

Also had friends with two ridgebacks, named them Murray and Barlow.

Working on it.

We need pictures.

Attiles. Attila. Bernie. Fluffy the love pooch. Bongo. Dog X. Steinbeck. Bluto.

Steven Wright says to name your dog “Stay”. Then when you call him, he gets confused. “Come”-Stay, “come”-Stay.

Kona! That’s what I’m going to name my yellow lab when I get him.

“Tugboat” obviously (I kept waiting for someone to bring that up)

Kona would be cool. Mine is named Ripken.

IMO, you and your wife should come up with the name. You guys are the only ones that need to like the name. Your dog will automatically like it because it is always connected to attention from you.

Naming a pet is fun and you have none of the social constraints that can go with naming children.

Here are some guidelines I would consider for coming up with a name. Relate to a positive interest or experience shared by you and your wife. For example, Kona is a popular pet name among triathlete couples. I’d go a step past that for something less trite like Kam or Humu. You get the idea. It’s got to be easy to say and phonetically distinctive. On the latter point, two syllables ending in an “EE” sound always works well. Sometimes the personality of the dog suggests a fun or clever name. How did you come by the dog? What’s special about his 5-month history? Since it’s a Valentines gift, do some research on words in all different languages for love, marriage, commitment, etc. You might find a word that pops for both of you. Pets are social ice-breakers, so it’s fun to have a distinctive name that has a fun or interesting story behind it when people ask about his name.

Let us know what you decide.

How about “Bonk”
