OT: Nancy Reagan photo on USA Today! cover

On the front page of today’s issue of USA Today! there is a photo of former First Lady Nancy Reagan.

Mrs. Reagan has her hand gently placed on her husband’s flag drapped casket.

I look at hundreds of photos each week in determining which ones we will keep and which ones will through out. I also love photography and look at photos in magazines and newspapers.

This photo tells such an incredible story. It refelcts the incredible legacy Ronald Reagan left on the world, and the significance of the loss suffered by former President Reagan’s family.

Looking at the photo briefly I feel so sad for Mrs. Reagan. While there is no denying the Reagan’s live a live of incredible privlege associated with the wealthy elite of U.S. society and culture- her loss is not just the loss of a spouse, but the loss of what may be the biggest part of her life. Throughout her life this woman conducted herself with poise and dignity. She was a figure to be admired and respected and sometimes even adored for her wit and candor.

The symbolism of this simple photo is enormous and deeply touching. Perhaps because of my familiarity with the Reagan administration it speaks to me in particular.

What a terribly enormous loss. The end of a great era. I suspect few Americans- in fact, citizens of this planet understand the full gravity of what we have just lost.

Take a look at the front page of today’s USA Today! if you have a moment, and see if you don’t agree.

The passing of the man does not mean that the era is over. It’s only over if we forget. We have lost a man, but we can still keep what he stood for. The outpouring of emotion and support from the crowds of people this week gives me a lot of gratitude for the past and hope for the future.

I dunno, Tom. Watching C-SPAN (or was it C-SPAN2?) and seeing the streets of D.C. filled-I mean filled, with mourners, I would suspect that a great number of people realize what a great president this country had.

“Behind every great man…”

Although the “open society” crowd liked to mock the Reagans for their devotion to each other, to me they stood as a symbol of what marriage truly can be.
