I am thinking of getting a new computer early next year. Also, I have a lot of CDs I plan on putting into itunes to use with my ipod. My concern is that I go through all of the trouble of putting the songs into itunes, then I “lose them” when I go to a new computer.
How easy is it to transfer all of your tunes over to a new computer?
The only way I could figure out was to burn them to CDs then copy them to my new computer. I’m sure there must be a better way, but it was only a few songs and I’m not too handy around these things.
If the songs are ripped from your own CD’s, then importing is crazy simple and prety fast. If you bought them from iTines, then you need to import them, then “authorize” the computer in itunes. Still easy, just an extra step.
you can transfer through a network cable - or if your old computer is a mac, you can boot it in “target disk mode”, hook it to your new mac with firewire, then import.
will your old computer be ‘operational’ when the new one arrives? if so, do you have a hub (no, not on the bike silly)? if ‘yes’ on the previous two, then you should be able to set up a small network and do a file transfer. if you don’t have a hub you can probably get away with a single crossover ethernet cable…assuming both computers have a ethernet card.
Burning the iTunes music folder to a CD (or several) is not a bad idea. You not only have an easy means of transferring them, you also now have a backup.
