OT: Holiday Pet Safety Tips from ASPCA

Yes, I’m running the Dallas Marathon next weekend, and, of course, Houston in January. Are you running?

I wouldn’t go so far as to recommend coffee, but a half cup or so shouldn’t really adversely affect your lab. Might make her more hyper, though!

To the point about other hazards:

  • Christmas tree lights. When I was younger our cat was playing around the tree, probably swatting at ornaments, and somehow got the string/cord wrapped around her neck, tightly, and almost choked to death. So at least try to tuck the lights where they’re not as easy for kitty to get to.
  • This is more winter related. Antifreeze is very deadly to animals - it only takes a small amount to kill them, even big dogs. A teaspoon. And they like the taste of it because it’s sweet (there was some law proposed that some bitter chemical/flavor be added for this same reason, but I’m sure that hasn’t gone anywhere yet), so if they see a puddle of it somewhere, they’ll lap it up. My cat died when I was little because the buffoons who worked on the pool left a bowl of it sitting in the basement. It was a horrible death.
