Some further stats I just heard on CNBC relating to a story that Diageo is closing down a plant in NW London and relocating the production of Guinness to existing facilities in Ireland:
Unfortunately, that’s been happening for a while. Apparently the young folks don’t want to wait for the pour, which is why Guinness came out with the FastPour™ technology last year.
It also doesn’t help that Diageo has been spending it’s money pimping the fruffy mixed drinks and malt liquors, and just assuming that everyone will keep drinking Guinness. (And I only found out recently that Diageo has been buyign up every scotch distillery it can get its hands on.)
Mostly, I blame my friend Paul. The English bastard drinks Busweiser when we go to the pub, “So I can drink 8 or 10 and not bump into walls”.
I knew a guy who could breath on the head of a well poured pint of Guinness and make the shape of a part of the female anatomy. It’s not easy - I tried for years and still couldn’t do it.
The bartender at the pub I used to visit a lot(I moved, so I only go there occasionally now) would draw a clover at the top of your pint if he liked you. He was also one of the few who understood that there should be NO MORE than half an inch of foam once the pint is fully settled. The best thing of all is that he would start pouring one for me as soon as I walked in the door, so my wait was very short indeed.
If you can believe it, he decided, after twenty years in Boston, to move back to Ireland. He was sick of living here.
