OT: Fun things to do in San Diego?

I’m taking the family(wife, daughters 4 and 6) to SD at the end of the month for a little R&R. I grew up in SD(on Coronado) but it has been 20yrs since I lived in the area. We are staying at the Del and plan to do the Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Sea World. What else would be fun to do with the kids while we are in town?
Thanks,
HC

You can watch them dig up the Soledad Mtn memorial cross, that’s always fun.

Legoland
.

Well…not that you would want your family to go there, but go out in Hillcrest if you get a chance. There is this bar called Lips where they have drag queens do lip-sync shows…freakin hillarious. Even better if some college kid gets dragged there against his will and the queens pick up that he doesn’t want to be there…

…btw, the food isn’t bad either.

La Jolla Cove or any of the beaches…it may be whale watching time now, I’m not sure, but you can take a boat out and try. Buy a kite a Seaport Village (you can take the ferry from Corodado).

If you are staying at the Del I would take the daughters for a beach walk, picking up shells, looking at birds and the like. Maybe pick up a field guide of some kind to identify shells or birds. Also, possibly a boat trip in the harbour, sea lions and such. I also haven’t been there in twenty years, I was there 84-87, Navy NASNI. I imagine a lot has changed. My thoughts are that if you do what you have stated and maybe throw in a bit of looking at wildlife in the natural state it would be more interesting and the kids would understand it better.

on a related note, due to waiting too long to book a hotel room over easter week, what is staying out in poway/rancho bernardo like? from websites, they seem like sterile suburban sprawl. granted i will have my mother-in-law, 2 year old and wife along, so my former late nights in PB and MB will be a thing of the past. additionally, anyone know of a good place to rent a high end bike? i will be looking to do rides on about 2 days. nytro claims to have felts available for $40/day, which turns out to be far cheaper than shipping my own bike. thanks for your time,

Southern California is the definition of suburban sprawl. You can find some nice golf course resorts in Poway/RB area though, and there are many good bike rides from that area, you’ll do much better starting from there than anything you could put together starting in Coronado. I’d put a bid on Priceline.com and see what you get. The downtown area of SD is getting to be sort of a pain in the butt to get into/out of unless you have a reason to be there, although weekends are probably not an issue. Your kids may be a little young for it but I enjoyed the tour of the Midway last time I was there. I’d second Nytro for the rental, although be careful you don’t wind up buying a new bike.

I second Legoland if your daughters like Lego at all.

There is lots to do @ Balboa Park (on the way to the zoo).

Brett

thanks guys.

Are you doing the Ralph’s Half IM by chance?

I second the suggestions of the others…balboa park,oh yeah the Wild Animal Park…great place to visit. Has a monorail that goes all around the permiter for about a 50 minute tour complete with narration. Enjoy,
