I just perfected my home roasted espresso blend yesterday and made a cup today. Un-#$*#ing-believable. I can’t believe that I’ve been paying for stale coffee all my adult life. I wish you could all taste it too. It’s easy to make with a pretty cheap roaster:
Thanks for that…sounds interesting. My wife’s been wanting to try this for sometime now - but I’ve been holding off. Coffee’s already complicated & expensive - we get Peet’s shipped to us on the East coast. May have to give it a go…
I forgot to mention… green (unroasted) beans cost about half as much as roasted ones – even less if you buy in 5lb+ quantities. There’s a dozen or so Internet outfits that sell beans and rosters. I figure my roaster has already paid for itself.
interesting. which roasting method or roaster did you use, what type of unroasted beans did you use and where did u get them?
I use the I-Roast. My sister has the FreshRoast +8. Both work very nicely. You definitely want to do it outside if you can, because it creates quite a smoky smell. I’ve ordered green beans from both http://www.sweetmarias.com and http://www.coffeeroasting.com/. Both sites have good instructions and guidelines for roasting.
Well, Starbuck’s is absolute C*%&. Haven’t had Peets in a while, so, can’t recall. If you want good stuff, and don’t want to roast your own, John Drake, who owns a bike shop in Toledo Oh, has been roasting for a couple years. He has recently started a company “Drake’s Coffee” and will take orders and ship in vacuum packages. It ain’t cheap, ain’t expensive, but absolutely the best coffee on the planet. He also does organic and espresso beans as well. Actually, his organic Kenyan is about the best bean there is, but it’s pricey. If you want to try it contact him at john@drakescoffee.com. He has a website that isn’t functional yet, but can also be contacted through his www.thebikeworks.com website. He’s a friend of mine, but I pay full price for the coffee, and still pimp it, cause it is simply the best.
If you’re in the area, stop in, he has free samples out and will pull you an exquisite shot of espresso.
Welcome to the club. At home, I drink French roast coffee. That’s because I can’t find Turkish coffee in mid-Michigan. Haven’t been to Starbucks in years. Don’t miss it. If people knew… But you know. Enjoy the taste. It’s addictive.
Home roasting is great, the only drawback is the smoke. I do it outdoors so it’s not an issue. Store bought coffee is usually months old and your paying up the ass for low grade beans.
I’ll be checking goodwill for an air popper. I can actually get green beans in town as we have a small coffe roaster here. He does the local business and supplies his own coffee shop.

You should be able to find Bosnian or other ex-Yu stores all over Michigan. They’ll have Turkish coffee for sure, probably different kinds as well.
should be able to work out where I am employed by the email address and if you are into coffee and particularly espresso and espresso based specialty coffee beverages
I am french press all the way, and i will hand grind when I have time. I found an electric burr grinder that wasn’t outrageously priced (garage sale) but I can’t get it to go as coarse as i would like. Too much coffee “dust” with the electric.
I was thinking Saeco at the time, but heard Simoni spouting his mouth again and decided to go jura-capresso instead. To be fair, the Saeco ones get very excellent reviews too.
As for Turkish coffee, it’s really about the grind rather than a specific coffee. Just get regular Arabica beans and then find a grinder that can grind it into face powder. Now, if you really want to get the all-out real thing, buy some Cardomom (if you go to an Arab store, it’s called “hub al-han”) and grind it in there too.
So you guys thought I was just obsessive about rolling resistance…
Do you think I was dissappointed when our company released the sponsorship on the team this past year???
ABSOLUTELY - I have amassed quite a nice collection of Saeco gear over the past few years though - much the same as US Postal backed out - we were in a diminishing return situation in terms of marketing. Our company underwent a re-structure and they felt the 12 million Euro could be better spent in new product development - so in that respect - we are lucky as we a re already seeing new products coming down the pipe!
one way or another I will be getting one for Christmas or my birthday. as if I need to be jacked up anymore than I am…but that’s besides the point…lol.
