Can you get hard shell crabs this time of year? We are coming from CO and would love to eat some hard shell crabs and drink some beer after the race.
Thanks.

If you don’t use protection you probably can. It’s better to be safe.
Right in Cambridge, just across the drawbridge (you will know it when you see it) is a really nice place that has a decent seafood menu and alot of beer. It is on the way to the transition area from the sailwinds park. Great deck overlooking the waterway.I seem to think that hardshells aren’t in season just yet, so you may be out of luck there. If you aren’t 21 yet, be sure to erase your calf number, a kid who recently turned pro, who has won the amateur overall at Blackwater before that, who shall remain nameless, (except for his nickname “Cheetah”) tried to get served there after the race in 2000, while still 20. Needless to say, after he walked by the bar to the bathroom, the waitress came back and carded everyone at the table. I laughed all the way home, my wife was thrilled, cause she got carded. Cheetah had to drink diet coke.
You can, but they won’t be Maryland crabs. The water temp is unusually cold this year and the crabs have not been plentiful yet. I know a crabber that had 100 pots out and brought about 100 crabs in.
The crabs you eat will be gulf coast crabs. There are a bunch of nice places right on the water on Kent Island. There are some in Cambridge but if you’re heading west hold on till you are on the island.
I live here in Cambridge - we definitely have Chesapeake crabs - about $120 a bushel at the LFM (local fishmonger). Problem is they are pretty weak this season. Last summer was a bumper crop but this year they suck (small and not too meaty).
If you want all you can eat crab FEAST - drive 30 minutes south of Cambridge to Delmar and the Old Mill Restaurant - all you can pick, plus all you can consume sweet tea, hushpuppies, fried chicken, fried clams… just what you need after eagleman. Last summer it was $35 per person.
The restaurants in Cambridge should also have crabs - but more expensive. Snappers and the Dockside are on the water and fine choices - snappers is a little better. Might not be Maryland crabs though.
If you are 35-39, don’t listen to those other posts. All you can eat crab is a GREAT prerace meal. Talk about carbo loading! Make sure you dip it in lots of butter too.

Damn. Just trying to keep the Red Roost to ourselves. Nice going Larry. Now it will be packed with a bunch of yahoos in peaceful tribe apparel.
BTW If you are ever back home, drop by and ride/run/swim with us. Triathlon club coalesced over the past few years in Cambridge. Be great to have you join us.

I think Vig (Rober Vigorito - RD for Eagleman and Columbia) is pushing the hard sell for Chesapeake Man to be an Mdot race. It has great possibility, just need to get the locals to embrace the sport a little more. One of those John Deere jerseys might help. I understand that they are looking for a mid-atlantic race…
It would be sweet to live in a small town with 2 IM qualifiers (not that it will increase my chances mind you…).

Summit
PM me about gettin’ crabs. I might have some options.

There’s a place in St. Michaels that is really good. My cousin and her friend ate about 40 between them in 15 minutes last night at their house in Oxford.
If you are interested in heading to St. Michaels, I can get the exact name/location for you.
Hey Summit,
Many options from posters have centered around eat-in. But if you want to get some crabs to take back to your lovely accommodations, the place just across the Choptank from Cambridge has pretty good crabs. The place just across the bridge located at Gateway Marina - first left across the bridge heading out of Cambridge. Not sure if they steam 'em there, but I imagine they do.
