OT: computer problem

I just got a new to me computer. PIII, 1000mhz running win2000pro. I did all my updates and loaded all the anti virus/spyware/adware stuff. Then I updated media player to 9. Now all my cds sound like mickey mouse is singing. Also online radio sounds speeded up too. Any thoughts? I got this computer specifically to allow me better music use and flexibility. so I’m a little annoyed.

Shoot! I’m late for work. I’ll check back tonite.

Hey Jim,

I would even recommend you use Linux instead. You won’t have to worry about things like virus software, nor would you have to worry about your computer getting hi-jacked by some ill-doers.

Plus, you won’t ever have to pay for upgrades to your system.

I’d be more than happy to help you with this if you are seriously interested. I’d need more info on your machine.

many possibilities: for one, win. med. player has selections on playback speed. is that it?

Could also be your sound card. try DLing the most recent drivers and checking discussion boards on the sound card manufacturer’s web site

Check device manager to make sure everything is happy there, check for new drivers for sound card.

same thing happened to me, and it was fixed with a driver update.

Heh,

I thought windows was supposed to be “easy”. This is the biggest myth on the planet that all hardware will just “work” with windows. You still have to play DLL hell, and then search for Drivers on the net in order to get something working.

Linux anyone?

http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ ← the distro I use, and it’s so easy my 60 year old Mom uses it.

Get a Mac…

OSX is nice. It has a Unix base. So… you can’t really argue about anything being bad for OSX. The UI is nice, and there are tons of commercial apps for it. That being said.

a.) if you have a PC already. Use Linux

b.) if you are poor (like me) Use Linux

c.) If you want something that rocks! Use Linux (or OSX if you can afford it)

My father-in-law uses Windows on his PC, and he’s always crying… “Why do I get all these viruses… why do I always have these problems with windows”.

My wife, his daughter, has been using Linux since 98, and she has never had one problem. Ever.

Linux. It just works.

Thanks guys, I posted this, went to work, realized on the way that the mosy probable answer was to download a different player. Got home found out occy was advocating a different os all together. I did a search found out that my sound card is the problem but nobody has a solid driver update.

Anyone reccommend a different cd player/ripper to me?

“Anyone reccommend a different cd player/ripper to me?”

Try:

  • iTunes
  • Musicmatch
  • Audio Ripper CD Pro
  • Real Player
  • Media Jukebox

I tend to use musicmatch as my first choice and then try Audio Ripper if the CD has some sort of copy protection on it that Musicmatch can’t handle.

I have to use Real Player for my mp3 player but I don’t normally use it to rip - it is less flexible for me than Musicmatch.

Hope that helps.

i’m pretty happy with mine:

i have the mp3cdburnerand its so simple even my neighbor’s canary could use it.

I tried 2 different players and get the same result, the chipmunks screaming heavy metal. I need a new sound card.
