Favorites.

Reorganizes itself in alphabetical order.

How to stop this?

right click on Start, then click

Explore > Favorites > View > Arrange Icons By > Modified

(if Favorites are not expanded by default, Favorites are under Documents and Settings which are under C:)

That “Explore” thing didn’t work, but the second thing got me going and everything after the Explore was just as you said.
