A week ago when I went to the computer to check mail and forums, there was nothing there. Computer was a blank slate. Let’s not worry about what happened, cause that’s not my current issue. After fuckin’ around for several days trying to find my files and even a program I gave up and took to a computer geek shop. They recovered everything on the hard drive, removed 4 viruses (virii?) and reinstalled windows. I brought it home and reinstalled all the programs from disc, but the one program that won’t reinstall is Norton Anti Virus (ain’t that ironic). It goes along fine but then blows up saying that it cannot register Live Update. I’ve emailed Norton, scoured their knowledge base and tried everything the KB recommended - no joy. Can anyone offer any insight as to how I can reinstall this program? I still have subscription time left and don’t want to buy a “new” subscription or keep operating on the internet w/o some level of protection.
I have experienced that at work (where only norton doesn’t install) on several xp machines and unfortunately all we have been able to do in order to solve the problem is wipe the box and reinstall everything…
Have you tried uninstalling all Norton products? I bet that you have. If not give that a try - even make sure to delete the symmantec / norton folders in your program files directory AFTER you have uninstalled, and only if you don’t have any other norton programs kicking around on your PC.
Clarification - can the computer not register Live Update when installing, or is Live Update not able to register on line? If LU can’t register online you might have the windows firewall enabled which is preventing outbound communications. That is unlikey, but a distinct possibility because if the shop reinstalled windows they might have been smart enough to install XP service pack2 which has the integrated firewall enabled by default.
If you are completely screwed and can’t get it to work I recommend one of the following AV programs:
Finally, check with your online provider. Time Warner gives a free copy of Computer Associates e-trust out to anyone who knows enough to ask. Usually if you check out your online help page they will have info and downloads.
You da MAN! I tried all the uninstall programs, went to program files and deleted the norton folder - no joy. So I took your MOST EXCELLENT advice and downloaded the AVG software. Since I’ve been back up and running for 2 days, I did a scan. Lo and behold, I had already aquired a trojan horse. Speaking of Trojans, I feel safe now, like I’m wearing a rubber in Olongapo City with a 5 peso bargirl on my arm.
