You don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy the atittitude … but knowing the characters puts it into perspective.
A New York Met dugout conversation between Lenny Dykstra and Billy Beane …
Dykstra: So, who’s that big dumbass out there on the hill?
Beane:Lenny, you’re kidding me, right? That’s Steve Carlton. He’s maybe the greatest left-hander in the history of the game.
Dykstra: Oh Yeah! I knew that!
Dykstra thinks for a minute
Dykstra: So, what’s he got?
Beane: Lenny, come on. Steve Carlton. He’s got heat and also maybe the nastiest slider ever.
Dykstra takes it all in for a minute
Dykstra: , I’ll stick him.
The line between ignorance and arrogance is sometimes beatifully thin.
The characters …
Lenny “Nails” Dykstra

Steve “Lefty” Carlton

Billy “GM of the A’s” Beane

That picture is of Dykstra pre-steroids, he really ballooned up when he was with the Phillies. Though I used to love to watch him hustle in the field and on the bases. Very entertaining player. Gotta love the nickname “nails” for doing everything all out.

Yeah … recovering from his back injury and surgery … he came back a New man, didn’t he?
I sued to chew a big wad of Red man back in my playing days. I had a poster of Lenny with a “Big Chaw” in my dorm room.
I read that book, and thought it was outstanding. As I recall, with that passage Billy Beane was saying that his tendency to overanalyze everything hurt him as a ballplayer. But that with players like Dykstra, ignorance can be bliss.
The ironic thing is that this tendency to overanalyze is serving him well as Oakland’s GM.
Being a Jays fan this guy has always been my favourite Phillies Pitcher :-):

The Hit!

Which sent Lenny to the "Car Wash! "
Who is Steve Carlton now Biatch!

LOL, classic!
Sorry I guess it’s sort of like mentioning William Joseph** **Buckner in Boston.
BTW I’m also a Leafs fan so karma is taking care of everything.

Or Don Denkinger is St. Louis. Todd Worrell’s foot is STILL on the bag … after 20 years!!!

DAMN!!!
Fun read guys! I’ve been a life long Philly sports fan. Ohhh, the pain! For those out of the 100 mile radius of Philadelphia, here is a link to listen to a true sports radio station: http://www.610wip.com/
BTW, Flyers bring home the cup in '06. NO DOUBT!
Reminds me of when the Cardinals signed pitcher, Tom “Home Run” Neidenfuer (sp?) a few years after he gave up playoff game-winning homers (as a Dodger) to Ozzie Smith and Jack Clark (of the Cardinals).
I guess that was the Redbirds’ way of saying “Hey, thanks.”
